Cerf urges standards for cloud computing

Vint Cerf, a co-designer of the Internet's TCP/IP protocols and considered a father of the Internet itself, emphasized the need for data portability standards for cloud computing during an appearance on Thursday evening.

There are different clouds from companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Google, but a lack of interoperability between them, Cerf explained at a session of the Churchill Club business and technology organization in Menlo Park, Calif.

Intel CEO shows first Moorestown smartphone

Intel on Thursday showed the first smartphone based on its upcoming Moorestown platform for mobile devices.

The GW990 smartphone will be made by LG Electronics and ship during the second half of the year, said Intel CEO Paul Otellini during a keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This is the first device launched that is based on Moorestown, a chip platform with an Atom-based processor that Intel is targeting at smartphones and mobile Internet devices.

Apple may not see a need to add support for Adobe Systems' Flash multimedia software to a smartphone, but other handset makers do and plan to release software updates soon.

Palm and Motorola are among the vendors betting users want access to a broader range of Web content from their phones. Both companies plan to add Flash support to their smartphones soon, executives said at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Nvidia's new chips target mobile devices

Nvidia launched its next-generation Tegra processor for low-cost laptops and tablets on Thursday, which could intensify competition with rival Intel in the chip market.

Nvidia's second generation of Tegra processors is for mobile devices with screen sizes from 5 inches to 15 inches. The new Tegra processors are close to four times faster than the previous generation of chips, Nvidia said at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Verizon gets enhanced version of Palm Pre

Verizon Wireless will start selling improved versions of Palm's Pre and Pixi smartphones later this month under an exclusive arrangement with the handset maker.

The Pre Plus is a modified version of the Pre that offers 16GB of flash memory. The updated design eliminates the navigation button from below the screen, which Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein said is meant to give the Pre Plus a more "elegant" appearance and improves navigation.

BMC scoops up Phurnace Software

BMC said Thursday it has purchased Austin, Texas, startup Phurnace Software, which makes products for easing the deployment of Java applications. Terms were not disclosed.

It plans to sell the Phurnace products under the moniker of BladeLogic Application Release Automation, as well as embed the technology into its BladeLogic Server Automation Suite.
