Move over e-mail, here come 'Pixetells'

A Portland, Ore., startup called Ontier is set on Monday to unveil Pixetell, communication software that combines text, video, images, and audio in a single message.

Regular e-mail, especially for complicated discussions, can be tedious, with many messages going back and forth before a problem gets solved, said CEO Sebastian Rapport, who will demonstrate Pixetell at the DEMO conference in Palm Desert, Calif.

Nokia considers developing its own laptop

Will the laptop and smartphone converge in the future? Nokia is lending more credence to that idea, with the company's comments yesterday that it may develop its own laptop. In an interview with Finnish broadcaster YLE, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said his company was "looking very actively" at the laptop market.

The modularity and licensing of Linux makes it well suited as the platform of choice for the burgeoning software appliance market, a Novell executive said at the VMworld conference in Cannes.

Software appliances are applications that come prepackaged with an operating system on, for example, a virtual machine or a USB stick.

Hackers: Ideology trumps profit when it comes to Web site attacks

A study of 57 Web site hacks from last year showed that 24 percent were aimed at defacing a site rather than financial gain.

The figures from the latest Web Hacking Incidents Database Annual Report suggest that stealing money and data is not always the overriding motivation for hackers, although it has been a rising trend in recent years.

Seagate sees datacenter power, SSDs as future priorities

Disk drive maker Seagate is working on solving the issue of power consumption in the datacenter, the company's CEO said in an interview with InfoWorld. While short on specific details, CEO Stephen Luczo said the company believes it has a competitive advantage with the issue. "There are architectural items that we’re working on there," Luczo said.
