Point and shoot cameras have come in waterproof versions for years now, enabling owners to shoot images in the rain, beneath the seas and everywhere in between. Hydrophobia 70-200: It's A Rain Coat For Your DSLR

Think Tank Photo has an affordable solution, and while it may look wacky, it's actually perfect for those who only need rain protection for their DSLR every now and then. The Hydrophobia 70-200 is designed to completely cover a DSLR as well as a 70-200mm (or smaller) lens, and essentially it's just a huge canopy/bag that engulfs your entire shooting rig. Which is really the only way to ensure that no water leaks in, odd as it may sound and look.
The best (ugliest?) part is the arm holes on both sides, which enable users to even cover up their shooting fingers while getting poured on. Thankfully, the rain cover includes a clear window for viewing the LCD and controls, and there's a fabric cover at the end of the lens. It's also just $139, so it's well within reason for most amateur photographers who fight the elements on occasion. Just be sure to check your humility at the door.

A key feature is that the camera can be carried twoways. It can be carried by the strap attached to the camera as it doesnot have to be removed. And, there is a camera strap attached to theHydrophobia 70-200 that, combined with a strap that buckles under thelens, allows the camera to be carried by the rain cover.
“Theproblem with other covers is that holes have to be cut into the top ofthe cover, and then using a special camera strap, the user has tounclip the camera strap from the camera, feeding it through the top ofthe cover,†said Doug Murdoch, Think Tank Photo’s CEO and leaddesigner. “With the Hydrophobia 70-200, we eliminated this problem bycreating a system that automatically transfers the weight to the raincover itself, while still keeping it water resistant.â€
Thefabric used on the Hydrophobia is ten times as water resistant asnormal fabric. Instead of a “spray†coating, a “film†is applied to theunderside of the fabric, as well as a
tricot mesh to protect it,making it a far more impenetrable three-layer fabric. In addition awaterproof tape is applied to all seams, providing an even more waterresistant barrier. The rain covers have the following key features:
A clear window for viewing LCD and controls
A fabric cover for the end of the lens.
An eyepiece storage pocket (eyepieces sold separately)
A breathable mesh bag for transportation and storage
Forprofessionals and amateur SLR shooters with smaller lenses who can’tafford to lose a shot or to have their gear damaged, the Hydrophobia™70-200 and the Hydrophobia™ Flash 70-200 are powerful new tools forgetting the shot in even the harshest conditions.

ACU Commits To Bring School Newspaper To iPad, Others To Follow?

ACU made waves across the educational and technology markets back when it decided to hand out iPhone 3GS phones to incoming freshmen, and now it's the first major institution to commit to bringing its school paper to the iPad. Apple clearly designed the iPad to be used by newspapers, and we already know that big ones like the New York Times will be jumping onboard to bring their content to Apple's first tablet.
But in our estimation, it will be the reaction of the smaller outlets and lesser-known papers that really defines the iPad. Will this finally be the device that convinces papers to make the jump to digital distribution? There's no doubt that the iPad is tailor made for newspaper reading, and if one school does it, others are sure to follow suit. Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of ACU's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, says students and faculty already are working to bring the paper (The Optomist) to the iPad this Spring. The school delivered its paper in iPhone format way back in the Fall of 2007, and now an iPad Task Force has been formed to "use dedicated faculty and student leaders from across campus to develop The Optimist's new digital publication platform."

"We pay close attention to the way young people consume news," says ACU's Kenneth Pybus, faculty adviser of The Optimist. "They tend to use all the tools at their disposal to get information. With the iPad, we foresee the potential for an explosion in news consumption."Professors Pybus and Bacon believe the iPad and its publishing platform will yield a marriage of audio, video and text unseen even since the advent of laptops and smart phones.
George Saltsman is executive director of ACU’s Adams Center for Teaching and Learning. "The work we will do leading up to the formal debut of the iPad is an outgrowth of research that's been happening on our campus for three years," says Saltsman. "Our campus community is already riding the next wave of digital communication. Publishing The Optimist on the iPad means our students will be ready to work with this revolutionary technology in the marketplace the minute they graduate. For some of our students, that day is right around the corner -- so of course they'll have a major jump on not only their peers, but also on veteran software developers nationwide."
The aspect of this software development drive that most fascinates Bacon is how it could revive the publishing sector as a whole, and newspaper publishing specifically. "The news business must find a way to keep news delivery profitable. Remaking the model for news delivery is the single most important discussion in journalism under way today," she says. “If our students and faculty, by being in the middle of that discussion, can help devise a profitable new delivery system, we will have accomplished something extraordinary.â€

TheDataTraveler 5000 utilizes patented Secured by SPYRUSâ„¢ technology whichsupports hardware-based 256-bit XTS-AES and Suite B cryptography, including ECC. Suite B algorithms were specifically selected andapproved by the U.S. government and the Department of Defense for usein multinational data sharing environments including both classifiedand unclassified applications. XTS-AES mode is a cipher mode forencryption that is much stronger than CBC, ECB and other modes. SPYRUS,Inc., is the leader in the development of advanced hardware-basedencryption, authentication and digital content security products.
FIPS140-2 certification requires a validation process that meets federalrequirements set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST). This is critical because many governmental agencies in the United Statesmandate that sensitive "data at rest" (i.e., all information not in thenetwork) must be encrypted with the FIPS 140-2 standard. Level 2 meansthe DataTraveler 5000 has a tamper-evident construction which acts tonotify any users if their drive has been tampered with. It also has apower-on self test that verifies the encryption mechanism is runningproperly each time the drive is plugged into a USB port. The drive isexpected to receive a FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certificate soon.

Asus ConfirmsTegra 2-Based Eee Pad Slate PC

He stated that an affordable touchscreen, 3G-equipped device in the form of a tablet would be unveiled later this year, and it will be equipped with NVIDIA's Tegra 2. That's not completely stunner, since we heard rumblings of such a device at CES 2010. However, when asked about Asus' reaction to the iPad, he stated the following:
"A slate? Yes, sure. We have the Eee Pad. Which right now is still under development. Basically, it will have an ARM CPU and a 3G connection so you are always connected to the internet, so just like with the Eee Book you are always connected.
And you can choose to play video or something, when you like. Now the key is how to combine the content together. That will be the key. We have studied how people will want to connect to their content and also how they want to interact with the user interface (UI).
You look at the iPhone, for example. The reason the iPhone is so successful – and call quality is really not that good – is the UI function, I think, is just the best. So this is also the way that we need to improve."

New Class-Action Lawsuit Against Microsoft Alleges "Microsoft Point" System Fraudulent

Underneath the legal verbiage, Lassoff's complaint is that the XBox Live store improperly charged Microsoft Points for partial downloads that were unable to complete. According to the complaint, this rises to the level of illegal fraud because Microsoft collected "revenue for digital goods and services which were not provided." Lasshoff was forced to file the suit after calling XBox Live Customer Support and spending "several hours" contacting his credit card company.

The filing describes these activities as "extremely burdensome" and states that they required "15 attorney hours over several days." Unfortunately, Lassoff neglected to provide the definition of the extremely suspect phrase "attorney hour," which we suggest most likely converts into just 1-2 of our normal Earth hours. The plaintiff is no stranger to frivolous lawsuits, having previously sued Google and Yahoo over click fraud, as well as an Atlantic City casino in 2005.
The lawsuit is unlikely to achieve its goal given that Lassoff probably spent all of $5-$20 dollars, but it could provide additional impetus for Microsoft to scrap the Microsoft Point system in favor of direct currency charges. While it's not a factor in the current complaint, customers have roundly disliked the fact that it's impossible to purchase a specific number of points that would correspond to the number actually needed to buy a particular item. Instead, gamers must buy points in pre-set blocks, the remainder of which are spent at a later date. Depending on how often one buys from the store, these unspent points effectively function as a free loan to Microsoft.
Microsoft has yet to file a formal response to the case, but will presumably do so after its lawyers manage to stop snickering.

TSMC Announces Quarterly Earnings, 40nm Sales Figures

Despite the firm's well-publicized issues, the company's 40nm yields do appear to be improving. TSMC reported that its advanced process technologies (defined as 130nm production and below) accounted for 70 percent of wafer revenue. The breakdown was as follows: 90nm sales were 16 percent of revenue, 65nm sales were 30 percent, and 40nm sales accounted for nine percent (up from four percent in Q3). For all the talk and excitement over cutting edge process nodes, it's worth noting that older "obsolete" production facilities continue to produce significant levels of revenue. 130nm manufacturing is ancient by Intel's (or even AMD's) standards; the former launched its 130nm Northwood CPUs in 2001 while the latter debuted "Thoroughbred" Athlon XP cores in 2002. 30 percent of TSMC's revenue, however, is derived from manufacturing technologies older than 130nm. Clearly there's still value in the older technology.
Asked about the company's expectations for Q1 2010, Laura Ho, VP and Chief Financial Officer of TSMC had this to say. "Although first quarter normally is a sequentially declining quarter for all three major semiconductor applications, we expect the demand from consumer related applications to grow in first quarter of 2010, while computer and communication related applications will decline following their seasonal pattern." Hopefully those demand shifts come along with an end to 40nm yield trouble.
