IDC Reports Record PC Shipments, Lower Revenue in 2009
The business analysis firm IDC has released data on the shape of the PC industry through the fourth quarter of 2009 and the results point towards a general recovery in all segments. Sales rose moderately in Q4 as compared to Q3, partly thanks to seasonal trends, but were up a full 31.3 percent over Q4 2009. The first half of 2009 was a downright rotten period for virtually every company in the hardware business, but a strong second half boosted total PC sales for the year up 2.5 percent from 2008. Only 7% Of Mobile Phone Users Would Benefit From An "Unlimited" Plan
Unlimited plans seem to be all the rage these days, particularly with wireless carriers. But we've always viewed them as things that should be treated with skepticism. "Unlimited" sounds great in theory, but the high prices that accompany them mean that you best be taking advantage of that "unlimited" allowance.

Over a year ago, Sprint shook up the wireless world with their "Simply Everything" plan, which allowed smartphone owners to access unlimited data, texting and calling for a flat $99.99 per month. The great news is that you always know what your bill will be, but the bad news is that you're paying $100 per month for services you may not really be using.

Earlier in the month, both AT&T and Verizon Wireless joined the fray by lowering prices on their unlimited voice plans. A new study by MyValidas.com has found that these sultry unlimited plans, while attractive for heavy users, may not be right for everyone. In fact, they may not be right for the vast majority of phone users.

The survey found that just 7% of consumers were really able to take advantage of an unlimited plan, while 93% were better off using some other plan options. And think about it--how often do you have unused minutes at the end of the month? How often do you go over? These days, with texting and mobile web use on the rise, it's becoming tougher and tougher to outtalk your plan minutes, and in most situations, simply upgrading to the next level of service still comes in cheaper than an expensive unlimited plan. Specific findings are below, and you should certainly have a look and think long and hard before you bite on an unlimited plan. Is it something you'll really benefit from? Chances are, it won't.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless recently lowered pricing on unlimitedvoice plans, generating headlines of increased competition and consumerbenefits. But do consumers really know whether the new unlimited planswill actually benefit them?

Insome cases subscribers will actually be forced to pay more for thewireless plans, especially in the case of family plans. Becausecarriers are now offering fewer options for big family plans, morepeople are being forced to move "up-plan" into unlimited plans, eventhough unlimited plans are actually oversized for them. For example,some popular 4,000-minute family plans were discontinued with theintroduction of the new unlimited plans. Now a family of five willactually pay $480 more per year on the new unlimited plan, which is the closest option to their previous plan. آ آ

"Inan industry where the FCC is asking carriers to simplify wirelessbilling practices, new services, applications and calling plans arecontinuously coming to market, which inevitably creates moreconfusion," said Tom Pepe, founder andCEO of Validas. "The reality is that the more options there are and themore plans change, the less consumers actually know what's best forthem."

MyValidas.com users have realized the following results since new unlimited plans were introduced: آ

  • 7% were optimized for unlimited plans;
  • 89% realized voice plan savings;
  • 75% of existing unlimited-plan subscribers were better suited with 900 or 450 minute plans;
  • $540– the annual savings existing unlimited plan subscribers realized afterusing MyValidas.com (decreasing their average monthly cost from $170 to $125).

"Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they'll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now -- we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you're going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific."
So there. We have confirmation on some of the details. iPhone OS on the tablet, which makes it transferable to the iPhone, as he said. Nice. Tomorrow can't come fast enough.

More Communities To Get Broadband Access, Via The USDA
Fifteen separate projects to bring high-speed Internet to ruralcommunities around the United States will be funded by the U.S.Department of Agriculture.

Many parts of the United Statesremain without high-speed options because the cost-benefit of buildingthe infrastructure in far-flung places hasn't been high enough forprivate providers. So in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Actlast year, $2.5 billion was earmarked for the USDA to make high-speedInternet more universal - though not quite as universal as Finlandhas. The Commerce Department, through its National Telecommunicationsand Information Administration, is giving out another $4.7 billion forbroadband.

In fact, U.S. broadband speeds lag behind many other "first-world" nations. A Speed Matters testshowed that only 20 percent of Americans receive broadband speeds equalto that of the top-tier nations in broadband speed - South Korea,Japan, Sweden and the Netherlands. Another 18 percent don't even haveaccess to speeds that meet the FCC's definition of broadband: a consistent "always on" connection of at least 768 kilobits per second downstream.

Thenewly funded USDA projects are in Alaska, Alabama, California, Iowa,Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee andVirginia and are a mix of grants and loans. They include:
• Morethan $16 million in Alleghany County, Va., to provide fiber-basedbroadband infrastructure. The goal is to foster economic development byproviding the ability for people to work from home, and to improve thehealth, education and public safety of county residents.
• Nearly $4million for Butler Telephone Co., in Butler, Ala., to providehigh-speed DSL to remote homes in its territory, built so it can beeasily upgraded in the future.
• About $3 million (and another $1.5million in matching funds) to build a fiber-optic network in Meridenand Archer, Iowa, with speeds exceeding 20 Mbps.

According to the Associated Press, the USDA's Rural Utilities Servicehas given out $363.7 million for 22 broadband projects across thecountry.

The NTIA hasawarded about $200 million in grants for 15 projects.

Applications for the next — and final round — of broadband funding from the USDA are due by March 15.

Palm Pre Plus And Pixi Plus Now On Sale At Verizon Wireless
Palm stole the show at CES 2009 when it introduced the world's first webOS-based smartphone, but a year spent on Sprint's network has left it in the shadows of the iPhone and a slew of Android phones. This week, Palm's giving itself a second chance by shipping the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus onto America's most populated cellphone carrier.

These two phones were originally introduced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and both are minor updates to the existing Pre and Pixi that are still for sale at Sprint. For those who aren't tied to any particular carrier at the moment, these two definitely feel more attractive. You get more storage and a broader 3G network, and the price points are the same.

Palm Pre Plus is available at $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate, and Palm Pixi Plus is $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate, each with a new two-year customer agreement. If you jump on it, you can buy one of these and get a Pixi Plus free after mail-in rebate through Valentine's Day. We should also mention that both the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus come travel-ready with a built-in 3G Mobile Hotspot, which is a Wi-Fi hotspot that can be shared among five Wi-Fi-capable devices.

Verizon now has every major phone platform except the iPhone, making it a serious, serious threat to AT&T. If we had to bet, we'd say that VZW may actually get its iPhone wish as early as this week.

doubleTwist Media Software Comes To T-Mobile Android Phones
You've heard of DVD Jon, but have you heard of doubleTwist? The creator of the infamous FairPlay hacking scheme has a rather down-to-Earth media management application, and big time companies are finally coming around to it. Big companies such as T-Mobile.

The carrier briefly mentioned that the Fender Limited Edition myTouch 3G would utilize the software, which essentially acts as a music/photos/video management tool for your phone. But now, T-Mobile has confessed that even more Android phones will ship with the app pre-loaded. Basically, non-iPhone users had few options when it came to elegant media syncing applications given that iTunes will only work with Apple's phone. doubleTwist actually looks and feels a lot like iTunes, and it generally accomplishes the same tasks--but with Android phones (and any other device).

T-Mobile is making the software available for free to existing myTouch 3G users, along with owners of the Motorola CLIQ and Samsung Behold II. It's also available for both Mac and Windows platforms, so unless you're a diehard Linux user, you're okay on that front.

The software, available for Windows(R) and Mac platforms,automatically finds music, photos and videos stored on a user'scomputer and enables seamless syncing of their media to their mobiledevices. doubleTwist includes step-by-step instructions for connectingand transferring DRM-free content to each supported device, making theprocess simple and accessible.

Userscan create and sync new playlists or import their existing iTunes(R)playlists to start enjoying their music on a new device. doubleTwistalso enables users to transfer videos and photos to and fromsmartphones and automatically converts video to ensure compatibilitywith each device, eliminating file format problems for consumers.

"doubleTwist is dedicated to providing consumers with a seamless digital media experience," said Monique Farantzos,CEO of doubleTwist Corp. "We are proud to partner with T-Mobile tooffer a customized solution to their users and create a compellingentertainment experience."

Warren McNeel,T-Mobile USA's vice president of product development, said, "We knowthe ability to easily transfer media and music from a computer to amobile device is a pain point for consumers, so we are pleased to workwith doubleTwist on an easy solution."

Despite Yield Problems, GPU Sales Surged in Q4 2009
Data from Jon Peddie Research confirms the positive GPU sales information we've heard from AMD of late, with the GPU market as a whole growing by 14.7 percent in Q4 as compared to Q3, and 10.3 percent for the entire year. Intel led the quarter in both market share and increased unit shipments, thanks partially to the joint impact of Atom chipset sales and its new Clarkdale processors, which JPR is calling CIGs (CPU integrated graphics.) Since Intel effectively owns both categories and Atom's effect on the mobile market has been additive rather than disruptive, Intel's overall volume was boosted for the period in question. In future quarters, Intel's CIG graphics shipments are expected to commensurately reduce its IGP sales, particularly as the company phases out the Core 2 Duo product lines.

Market share percentages and year-on-year shifts for the top three GPU manufacturers are shown below.

آ All three vendors increased their total volume of shipments in absolute terms, including NVIDIA. Despite the company's 6.3 percentage point loss of market share, its total unit volume grew 47.3 percent year-on-year. AMD's ratio was even better—while Sunnyvale captured just 0.6 percentage points of additional market share, its unit volume was up 91.5 percent.

Broken down by form factor, AMD gained integrated mobile GPU market share but slipped in discrete in both desktop and mobile. NVIDIA's share of the discrete desktop market grew in the fourth quarter, despite the fact that both companies have been hamstrung by TSMC's yield problems at 40nm, but Team Green reportedly lost ground in both the desktop and laptop integrated markets.

The 2009 sales figures mark the eighth straight year of volume growth in the GPU market, from a total of 180.6 million graphics chips shipped in 2002 up to 425.4 million in 2009.
