Windows 7 Selling Well After Launch, Bigger Market Share Than OS X
Windows 7 has been on the market for over a full quarter now, so it's about time for a check on how the OS is doing. According to figures from Net Applications, the system looks to be doing quite well. So well, in fact, that the growth rate is making Vista's old launch growth rate look mighty bad in comparison. A peek at the worldwide OS market share from December 2009 shows that Windows as a whole is around 92%. Really though, that's not the story. Windows has had over 90% of the overall operating system share

AT&T Insiders Report iPhone Exclusivity Going Away On Wednesday
It's sort of hard to believe that all the hype from CES is already over and done with. Larger companies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to introduce and showcase new products at the show, and now all anyone wants to talk about in the tech world is Apple. Must be nice to be Steve Jobs (or an investor). Tetris Reaches, And Passes, 100 Million Paid Mobile Downloads
Tetris, which last year celebrated 25 years of falling bricks, has hit, and passed, 100 million downloads to various mobile devices. -Blue Planet Software, Inc., the company that manages the exclusive licensing rights to the game, and EA Mobile, a division of Electronic Arts Inc., announced the milestone at a press conference on Thursday.

Tetris is, for those not in the know, a simplistic game that involves a player rotating falling geometric shapes made up of bricks to complete and cause rows to vanish. The simplicity makes it an ideal game for mobile devices. It also makes it addicting, as well.

Henk Rogers, CEO of Blue Planet Software, said:
“Tetris on mobile will never go away. As mobile devices get into the hands of more people, so does Tetris. People are always looking for ways to fill their time — be it in waiting rooms or on the bus — and with the advent of touch screens and improved platforms, our eyes are opened to a whole new way to develop games. After Tetris’ success with the Game Boy in 1989, we always hoped that potential would carry over into today’s mobile devices. It’s a testament to the game’s staying power that it remains popular on today’s most modern technology.â€‌
For those wondering, yes, there is an iPhone app for that. There is a $4.99 official version of Tetris in the App Store.

While you're celebrating along with EA Mobile and Blue Planet Software, play a round of two of Internet-based Tetris, on us.

Windows 7 Selling Well After Launch, Bigger Market Share Than OS X
Windows 7 has been on the market for over a full quarter now, so it'sabout time for a check on how the OS is doing. According to figuresfrom Net Applications, the system looks to be doing quite well. Sowell, in fact, that the growth rate is making Vista's old launch growthrate look mighty bad in comparison.

A peek at the worldwide OS market share from December 2009 shows thatWindows as a whole is around 92%. Really though, that's not the story.Windows has had over 90% of the overall operating system share formany, many years, but it's the rapid increase of Windows 7 users thatis really of interest. If you look at the first small window of timeafter launch, you'll see that Win7 is skyrocketing up the charts, whereas Vista's was more of a slow climb. A few factors are involved. For one, Windows 7 was launched just before the holiday buying seasonbegan, which surely helped convince people to upgrade who may haveotherwise waited. Also, Vista had a rather sour reputation, whereasWindows 7 was seen as the "Vista that should have been." There's nobetter way to get people to upgrade than to give them a product that'ssignificantly better than the prior version.

When looking specifically at one month after launch, Vista had just0.93% of the overall market share. Windows 7 had 4%. After two months,Vista was at 2.04%. Windows 7 got up to 5.71%. Clearly, Win7 had agreat draw at launch, and now the OS alone has more market share thanall versions of Mac OS X combined. Not too shabby, huh?

YouTube Introduces Movie Rentals
YouTube is beginning to roll out a new movie rental service, albeit in a fairly small fashion. Currently, YouTube is offering five titles from independent filmmakers. The five titles will be available through the end of this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Although YouTube's new offering doesn't begin to compete with other online rental services such as Netflix which offers thousands of films, YouTube plans to offer more movies at some point. Furthermore, the move represents a significant shift for the online video site which has traditionally thrived by offering free video clips and earning money primarily from advertising revenue. YouTube also currently offers some older, full-length movies for free on its site.

It's been reported that YouTube held discussions with major movie studios such as Lionsgate Entertainment, Sony, and Warner Brothers last summer in hopes of working on a rental service. YouTube has not confirmed the talks with the studios or the test with Google employees which supposedly took place in the fall.

The five independent titles that are available through YouTube include The Cove, Bass Ackwards, One Too Many Mornings, Homewrecker, and Children of Invention. YouTube said it plans to add additional content to the rental service soon including educational, health, and fitness-related videos.

YouTube also plans to begin a program called “Filmmakers Wantedâ€‌ that will enable other independent producers to make their films available on YouTube. The filmmakers will determine the rental price of the movie and will keep the majority of the revenue collected.

The company that gave the world the iPod and iPhone is planning a media event on the 27th of this month, and while the world tends to believe a tablet or slate of some sort is planned, there has been no definite proof of that to this point.

We really have no idea what's next from Apple; we just know that it'll be something to unleash one's creative side based according to aآ tagline in the invite. According to an insideآ source close to the going-ons involved in all of this, a new tablet of some sort may not be the only thing on deck for next Wednesday though. We have been led to believeآ by an inside source that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on the same day, though it's not yet clear what other carrier (or carriers) will be stepping in to also carry the phone. For anyone who has followed the saga, you may notice that you haven't seen AT&T fighting to extend their original exclusive agreement of late. In fact, they have spent most of their time fighting Verizon's negative ad campaign.

This may not be all that surprising. Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before. On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T's image. Because they are the only company to carry it, and it's such a data hog, it's largely to blame for AT&T's network troubles. We don't remember hearing about AT&T's "horrible network" before the iPhone--do you? The iPhone itself doesn't really handle the switch from 3G to EDGE very well, so calls that are in-progress tend to fail whenever the 3G bands aren't optimal and the phone attempts to step down to EDGE. It seems that AT&T is tired of taking the heat for this, and at this point, they may be smart to just let another carrier take some of those customers who are most inclined to complain.

Weآ alsoآ heard thatآ when AT&T loses their grip on the iPhone, they'll be introducing a bunch of other new smartphones with new platforms in order to "compensate." At CES, it was announced that new Windows Mobile, Android and webOS-based phones were destined to land on AT&T, but few details were provided as to when. Now, it seems the puzzle pieces are beginning to slot together. It's possible that AT&T recently went searching for deals with other phone makers in order to proactively bolster its smartphone lineup for when this day-of-doom would come. AT&T has gained a huge amount of subscribers from being the only operator with the iPhone, and if it loses that advantage, it'll need some other cutting-edge, high-brow phones to keep people's attention.

One big happy family soon?

It's hard to say what'll happen ifآ a carrierآ like Verizon gets the iPhone. Will existing iPhone users on AT&T run in droves to switch, regardless of the early termination fee? Will existing AT&T iPhone users stick with their plan? Maybe Apple will simply see a new influx of iPhone users, as customers who were always wary of AT&T finally make the jump now that the phone is a on a network with better perceived quality? We still have to take all of this as rumor for now, but we have very good reason to believeآ that we'll see AT&T quietly (or perhaps not so quietly) lose its grip on the iPhone come Wednesday. What happens after that is anyone's guess, but we would expect the overall iPhone market share in the US to surge quite significantly if it's made available on a CDMA carrier.
