AMD's New Year refresh CPUs launched and tested
With Intel launching their latest "Clarkdale" parts just a scant few days into 2010, it's now AMD's turn to respond, which they've done by releasing five new CPUs across their product range, tweaking clock speeds here and dropping prices there.آ A couple of sites have taken some of these new offerings for a spin to see how they stack up in the early 2010 processor marketplace.
For a thread-junkie, you can't beat the Athlon II X4. You get more cores for $99 than Intel would dream of selling and today AMD is making it even more affordable. The Athlon II X4 630 drops from $122 to $99, and the new 635 enters at $119. The 635 doesn't give you much, just an extra 100MHz for $20 more.
The 620 was my pick for 3D rendering/video encoding on a budget. Now with the price drop, the 630 is the chip to get. The 635 isn't really worth the added dough at stock clock speeds. If you're going to be overclocking though, the news is good.
I got my Athlon II X4 635 up to 3.5GHz without any additional voltage, this is an improvement over the first Athlon II X4s I received. Back in September the best I could do was ~3.3GHz.

AMD is launching a bevy of new processors today, targeted squarely at budget conscious consumers, looking to save a few bucks on the their next PC build. The new processors differ from previous offerings in their respective product families in terms of frequency, and of course their model names, but all are based on existing architectures and technology.
The new line-up of processors AMD is introducing today consists of the following products...
- Phenom II X2 555آ -آ $99
- Athlon II X4 635آ -آ $119
- Athlon II X3 440آ -آ $84
- Athlon II X2 255آ -آ $74
- Phenom II X4 910eآ -آ $169
We decided to take the 3.2GHz Phenom II X2 555 and 2.9GHz Athlon II X4 635 for a spin and have their performance results posted on the pages ahead.
