The OCC Report

The OCC Christmas contest is over, the winners have been announced, and prizes are starting to ship. Congrats to everyone! Didn't win something this time? Don't worry; we have plenty more contests and random giveaways planned for 2010!

Right after the New Year our staff will be headed to Vegas baby! Once again, we’ll be covering the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to bring you the latest news, pictures, and previews of upcoming technology and products. Heck, we might even end up with a few YouTube videos of the staff making complete fools of ourselves. It’s Vegas and with a dozen of us there anything is possible to happen. ;)

Upcoming contests, CES coverage, technology news, and new product review each weekday it can be hard to keep up with everything that’s going on. Thankfully, you can get review announcements, news, and more by following OCC on Twitter or Facebook. Not into the social media thing? That’s alright; we offer an old fashion semi-regular newsletter as well. And remember, with the 2009 OCC Christmas Contest we gave members extra entries for following us on Facebook or signing up for the newsletter. You never know when that will happen again, or when we might offer exclusive contests for those kinds of things. Hint hint.

Thanks again to all of our wonderful members for making 2009 a great year. We're looking forward to 2010, and we hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year. ~ OCC Staff

Rumor: HTC Nexus One aka Google Phone Information Leaked

A tipster sent some info into Gizmodo that appear to spill the beans about the Google Phone, otherwise known as the HTC Nexus One.

There look to be two options. You can bring your own network and buy an unlocked Nexus One for $530, or take the subsidized price of $180 with a $80/mo 2-year contract with T-Mobile. If you have an existing T-Mobile (cheaper) plan and want the Nexus One, you have to switch to the $80 plan or purchase the unlocked version of the phone. Additionally, if you decide to cancel your plan within the first four months, you have to pay a $350 termination fee which allows the companies to recoup the subsidized costs.

TmoNews is also reporting that the phone will be sold through Google's website only and will go on sale Jan. 5, 2010 at 9am. No time zone was provided, so it could be 9am local or 9am PST/Google time.

120 Years of National Geographic Available On 160GB Drive

The National Geographic magazine is now offering their entire 120-year catalogue (1888 - 2008) on a 160GB USB hard drive for $199.95. That's almost 89% off the cover price if you take into account the current subscription rate of $15 per year [Sorry, I couldn't resist. -d3]. The complete collection includes every page ever printed from the articles and photographs all the way down to the advertisements; everything is digitally reproduced in "stunning high definition". I'm not sure how stunning a black and white photo from 1888 could possibly be, but I'm sure it would be neat.

The drive is partitioned with 100GB free that can be used to store whatever. System requirements are available on the product page. Sadly for those of you across the pond, this ships in the US and Canada only.

New Evidence in Case Against Seagate

An ongoing court battle between Seagate and Convolve has gotten more interesting thanks to Paul Galloway. The former Seagate employee has turned whistle-blower, and has submitted an affidavit regarding Seagate's actions. Convolve is a company formed by MIT to market and distribute technology it created at the turn of the century to reduce noise and vibration in hard drives. Convolve met with Seagate and shortly thereafter Seagate had its own technology to do the same. Seagate was only able to accomplish this after seeing what Convolve had done. According to Galloway, the Seagate engineers were unaware of an NDA with Convolve regarding the technology. Similar suits are also pending against Dell, Hitachi, and Western Digital.
