ASUS GeForce GT240 GDDR5 Video Card :: Posted by THRASHER2
As enthusiasts, we're always interested in the latest monster video cards: the expensive, high-end products that blast through benchmarks and play all your games with buttery-smooth frame rates at the highest resolutions with all the settings maxed out- and sucking a not inconsiderable amount of electricity while doing so! But these products represent only a tiny fraction of the number of video cards sold; the low-to-mid-end cards comprise the bulk of the market. Besides, a GTX285 or Radeon 5870 isn't the ideal solution for every situation: considerations from a limited budget to building a small, quiet system come into play. NVIDIA has been filling out the low-middle end of their video card product line lately, and in this article Benchmark Reviews tests the ASUS ENGT240/DI/512MD5/A video card equipped with with NVIDIA's new GeForce GT240 GPU and 512M of GDDR5 memory.

Small Wonder: Zotac's HD-ND01 Nettop Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
The market for nettops-small, highly-integrated, mini-ITX desktops, typically based around Intel's Atom-didn't explode off the block the way netbooks did in the past 18 months, but an increasing number of manufacturers from Acer to Dell have released new designs built around the standard, and the systems in question are steadily becoming more powerful. Zotac is no stranger to the mini-ITX market, but the company's line of mini-PCs aims to provide more than just a motherboard. Zotac now has two complete systems on the market-the HD-NS01 (Atom 270, 1GB RAM) and the HD-ND01 (Atom 330, 2GB RAM). We'll be evaluating the latter system today, with an eye towards the features and capabilities Zotac has packed into its MAG (Mini All-in-one Giant)...

OCZ Platinum DDR3-1333 4GB Low Voltage Dual Channel Memory :: Posted by THRASHER2
آ“The standard for DDR3 memory is still 1.5v, but most high performance memory has voltages far above that. Many earlier high performance DDR3 modules had a Vdimm of 1.9v-2.1v. It still amazes me that the memory manufacturers were able to make DDR3 memory run at DDR3-2000 and higher at 1.65v. Today I will be looking at yet another low voltage dual channel kit, this one by OCZ, their Platinum DDR3-1333 4GB kit. It runs with timings of 7-7-7-20, at Intelآ’s required 1.65v. AMD Phenom II 965 X4 Black Edition C3 Processor Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
"Although AMD has had some exciting new mid- and entry-level chips come to market in the last several months, their top of the line Phenom II series has not seen much action since the beginning of the year. But since we won't see AMD's new six-core desktop Thuban processor emerge until next year, what we have to feed off of in the meantime is a new Phenom II core revision, the C3. Beginning with the highest-clocked chip, the 965 BE, the new core will begin to filter down through the rest of the lineup through next year. Enhancements to the core are expected to lower voltage requirements and thus reduce operating temperature, which can potentially lead to better, more stable overclocks. Is it worth the upgrade expense for a current Phenom II owner to make the change to the new revision though? Join me as I aim to find out!"

Noctua NF-P14 FLX 140mm Fans @ DragonSteelMods :: Posted by THRASHER2
"Today for review I've got a pair of new fans from Noctua, they're called the NF-P14 FLX fans. They're 140mm fans making them fairly large of course, these 140mm fans are special in that they have round frames. The round frames make the fan essentially smaller, or at least the frame is smaller. The mounting holes in the frame will fit where any 120mm fan will fit, thus the end user can easily replace a 120mm fan with a 140mm fan for even more cooling ability. You can use the NF-P14 though in a 140mm space since Noctua has included adapters to help you do this. So read on to learn more... "

SSD Performance: Marvell SATA-6G vs Intel ICH10 @ BmR :: Posted by THRASHER2
When the Seagate Barracuda XT was revealed as the World's first-ever third generation SATA 6GBps hard drive, expectations for performance were raised to match the new bandwidth limit. While this drive offered tremendous storage capacity paired to good performance, the transfer speeds were nowhere near the second generation SATA 3GBps limit. This is where Benchmark Reviews turns to our vast collection of Solid State Drive storage products, some of which eclipse the SATA-II range. However, our history of SSD performance tests on the Intel ICH10 Southbridge would prove to be very different than our results on the new Marvell 88SE9123 or 88SE9128 SATA-III chips. In this article, Benchmark Reviews compares Marvell SATA 6G SSD performance against tests on the Intel ICH10 chipset.

Corsairآ® launches Dominatorآ™ GTX 2250MHz ultra-performance :: Posted by THRASHER2
FREMONT, California, December 3, 2009 آ— Corsair, a worldwide leader in high-performance computer and flash memory products, today announced the launch of its new Dominator GTX ultra-high performance DDR3 memory modules for Intelآ® and AMDآ™ platforms, designed specifically for performance enthusiasts, gamers and extreme overclockers.

Corsair Dominator GTX modules are individually screened and tested on multiple high-performance Intel X58 and P55 chipset platforms to ensure that they operate at the incredible frequency of 2250MHz at low-latency timings of 8-8-8-24 at 1.65V. They are designed specifically for performance enthusiasts and overclockers who want to achieve the highest performance possible and to break benchmark world records.

"Corsair has a long history of delivering the fastest overclocking memory on the planet, and our engineering expertise and unique understanding of the enthusiast market allows us to continue to push boundaries," said Kevin Conley, VP of Engineering at Corsair. "Corsair Dominator GTX modules are the most tightly-screened, highest-quality and fastest DDR3 memory modules in the world, and we look forward to seeing what the enthusiast and overclocking community can do with these exciting new products."

In addition to the incredible frequencies possible on Intel platforms, Dominator GTX modules have also been tested and verified to operate at up to 1800MHz CL6 in high-performance Socket AM3 motherboards for AMD Phenomآ™ II processors, providing AMD enthusiasts with a powerful new weapon in their overclocking arsenal. The following table shows baseline performance in a number of popular DDR3 platforms.

Dominator GTX modules use Corsair's unique DHX+ heatsink and are supplied with extra-tall cooling fins to maximize heat dissipation. The part number for this module is CMGTX2, and it is sold as a single module, allowing enthusiasts to purchase two modules for dual-channel configurations or three modules for triple-channel configurations. It occupies two expansion slots, but at the same time gives extreme performance. Ximatek adds two powerful 100mm Fans to accomplish the "Perfect Product", and plate it with black nickel and utilise two transparent fans so as to become one of the spotlights in your PC-System. With the marketing speak out of the way, we'll move on to what it takes to make or br! eak this product - real world testing. We all know H.D.T. works well for multi-core processors with heat spreaders, join Benchmark Reviews as we test the Xigmatek Bifrost and see what it can do for your exposed GPU die.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
آ“After doing a lot of experimenting with coolers utilizing this technology, I have found that it does work rather than just looking good on paper. Todayآ’s cooler will be the 11th I have tested using this, and I have found that just as a copper-based cooler, it is what the manufacturer does with the remainder of the cooler that determines how well it cools. Today I will be looking at the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler. It is a 4-heatpipe 120mm tower cooler utilizing Direct contact heatpipes. Intel Unveils 48-Core Single-Chip Cloud Computer :: Posted by THRASHER2
Earlier today, in a San Francisco press briefing, Intel Chief Technology Officer, Justin Rattner took the wraps off a proof of concept and experimental product that Intel dubbed a "Single-Chip Cloud Computer". The objective this chip was designed to address is the huge opportunity that exists to reduce power consumption and space in the data center, a very real place, rather than mythical, where "the cloud" really exists and increasing user demand for online services continues to chew up bandwidth, processing resources and storage like there is no tomorrow.

SilverStone TS05 External USB 2.0 Blu-ray Drive Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
"Being such a techie, I am typically an early adopter with anything tech related but I decided to take a rain check when it came to the whole high definition format war. While I do enjoy the occasional movie, I am far from a movie buff or someone that has a huge movie collection. Combine that with the fact that one format would ultimately prevail over the other (R.I.P. HD DVD) and prices only come down over time on new technology, it only made sense for me to wait on Blu-ray. Fast-forward two years to today and Blu-ray has made its way into the homes of many. Today I will be taking a look at a portable Blu-ray player from SilverStone that operates via USB so you can use it with either a notebook or a desktop computer."

Galaxy GeForce GT 240 (DDR5) Graphics Card Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
The GeForce GT 240 is a derivative of the GT200 GPU that powers the GeForce GTX 280 and the GeForce GTX 260. It is a slimmed-down version that features 96 stream processors and 8 ROPs. At the official core speed of 550 MHz, it is capable of processing up to 17.6 billion texels and 4.4 billion pixels per second.

Officially, the GeForce GT 240 can either use 900 MHz DDR3, 1 GHz GDDR3 or 850 MHz GDDR5 memory, delivering anywhere from 28.8 GB/s to 54.4 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

But Galaxy is never satisfied with sticking to the official specifications. Even though they are not officially calling this a factory-overclocked card, Galaxy gave their GeForce GT 240 (DDR5) card a slight boost in memory clock speed, going from 850 MHz to 900 MHz. Let's see how well that works out for them..

Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X Video Card Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
"The Sapphire Vapor-X HD5750 has a look all its own. Though, looks aren't what the Vapor-X is all about; it's about performance. Using their patent pending Black Diamond Chokes they can offer a card that is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than other cards that use the normal chokes. To keep things even cooler this card uses the Vapor-X cooler. A key point for me aside from performance (which the Vapor-X has plenty of) is the noise, or lack thereof. Throughout the testing I never heard a peep out of the fan. The test I was sure I would hear the fan on was the power consumption test. I disabled all the other fans in the system so that they wouldn't fluctuate speed and power, and I still couldn't hear the fan on the Vapor-X while it was set on auto..."

Speedlink Gravity Blaster Review - XSReviews :: Posted by THRASHER2
"With music becoming increasingly centred around the home computer, a decent set of PC-compatible speakers has become almost a necessity. Even leaving aside the tendency towards downloading - legal or otherwise - keeping your CD collection on a hard-drive is now common-place and provides many benefits. It's easier to organise, retrieve and backup media stored to disk than hundreds (or even thousands) of CDs, tapes, LPs, mini-dics, and such.

Even when recorded in one of the many loss less audio formats - FLAC, True Audio (TTA), Apple Loss less, MPEG-4 ALS, etc - a hard-drive the size of a paperback could store many hundreds of CDs, thus making it an extremely efficient use of space. Since we'll all be living in Tokyo-style pods soon anyway, larger media will probably become obsolete eventually, if not merely at an excessive premium. The thirst for a clear and precise rendering of all that binary finery is quite palpable, but perhaps Speedlink can satisfy it?"

Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 i7/i5 Optimized 4GB Dual Channel :: Posted by THRASHER2
آ“It obviously wasnآ’t an insurmountable problem, as we saw DDR3-2000 triple channel kits not long after the release of the LGA 1366 i7, and I found that not only did they do DDR3-2000 at that voltage, they were all able to be overclocked beyond that. Now that the LGA 1156 has been released, we need dual channel kits utilizing that same low voltage requirement. That obviously was no problem, the memory was already there, they just needed packaging that held only two modules rather than three. ASUS P7P55D Evo Intel P55 Motherboard Review :: Posted by THRASHER2
آ“The lack of a Northbridge means the elimination of the hottest chip on the motherboard and the need for cooling that chip, along with the associated traces, etc, which means building a P55 motherboard costs less. Apparently the motherboard manufacturers have passed those savings along to the consumer, the average price of a P55 board is about $100 less than the average price of an X58 board. The processors are less expensive too, the release price of the LGA 1156 Core i7 860 was a little less than $100 below the release price of the LGA 1366 Core i7 920. And itآ’s given that a dual channel memory kit will cost less than a triple channel kit with the same specifications, so expect to save $200-$250 when building a new LGA 1156 rig as compared with a new LGA 1366 rig in the early part of this year.
