Bing Maps Beta Underway

Falling short of Google maps functionality, Bing maps is on it's way to rivaling Google maps but one downside is that it requires the installation of Silverlight which users may be opposed to.

Bing Map Screen

Microsoft's Bing took a major step forward Wednesday in adding rich mapping and image data to its search engine, but until it assembles more data, pretty pictures aren't enough to beat the Google Maps juggernaut. Bing Maps Beta was released during a presentation at Microsoft's offices here. It's a Silverlight-based application that runs inside Bing Maps and adds Microsoft's version of Google Street View--called Streetside--to Bing Maps, as well as enhanced "bird's eye" images that let you swoop over cities.

Evercool Fit Notebook Cooler Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

"The Fit is small, comes with a retractable cable, and also comes with a small bag to carry everything in. In other words, very mobile which is great for people that are constantly on the go. While the cooler doesn't provide some benefits such as ergonomic benefits that many other coolers offer, some people would rather keep their laptop flat which would make the Fit a great solution for that."

Intel Unveils 48-core Cloud Computing Chip

One of the hot buzzwords in the tech industry for awhile has been "cloud" computing. Intel has unveiled an impressive 48 core chip based on the x86 architecture allowing each core to run a separate OS.

Intel Logo

Intel has unveiled a prototype chip that packs 48 separate processing cores on to a chunk of silicon the size of a postage stamp. The Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC), as it is known, contains 1.3 billion transistors, the tiny on-off switches that underpin chip technology. Each processing core could, in theory, run a separate operating system.

Thermaltake Lanbox Lite Case Review @ Hi Tech Legion and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

"I am a pretty big gamer, and I definitely am known to frequent a LAN party or two. In most cases, I would be packing up one of my computers that was housed in a mid tower case, which was far from portable. Now having tested the Lanbox Lite and seen the room that this case provides, I think a LAN build will be in order for me. The easy installation with excellent airflow will allow me to run a full sized graphics card with good graphics power for gaming. In addition, the side windows and the stylish exterior will certainly garner attention from my fellow gamers at the next LAN party I attend. If LAN parties are not your thing, dont pass over this case without a look. The stylish design and excellent interior space makes this a very nice HTPC case that will add a nice touch to any entertainment center. The quiet running fans do not contribute much to the noise levels, which makes for a quiet solution as a piece of entertainment for your home theater center."

Chevy Volt Picked To Launch First in California Next Year

California will be the "lead market" for the Chevy Volt when the electrically driven car is available at the end of next year, General Motors said Wednesday. California was chosen because the state has the largest U.S. car market, and Californians are "known to be leaders in adopting groundbreaking new technologies," GM's vice president of global Chevrolet brand, Brent Deware, said in a statement pegged to this week's Los Angeles International Auto Show. The 2011 Chevy Volt is an electric car that goes 40 miles on an electric charge. This reduces harmful carbon emissions and gas usage.

Chevy Volt

Production of the Volt is scheduled to start in late 2010. GM has not announced pricing for the 2011 model, though newly dethroned CEO Fritz Henderson acknowledged earlier this fall that the price would be about $40,000. (GM's board on Tuesday asked Henderson to resign, effective immediately.) As part of the California rollout, GM plans to make 100 Volts available to three utilities for testing. The cars will be used as fleet vehicles, and performance data will be collected via GM's OnStar in-car communications for a Department of Energy-run research program.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X Video Card Review

The Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X, with the configuration of 720 stream processors and 1GB of GDDR5 memory offers users access to the same new generation technology, and full DirectX 11 support found on the more expensive models at a lower price point. The Vapor-X model is also factory overclocked and uses a better cooling solution than the reference design. Read on to see what this budget friendly card is all about.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X Video Card

The Sapphire Vapor-X HD5750 has a look all its own. Though, looks aren't what the Vapor-X is all about; it's about performance. Using their patent pending Black Diamond Chokes they can offer a card that is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than other cards that use the normal chokes. To keep things even cooler this card uses the Vapor-X cooler. A key point for me aside from performance (which the Vapor-X has plenty of) is the noise, or lack thereof. Throughout the testing I never heard a peep out of the fan. The test I was sure I would hear the fan on was the power consumption test. I disabled all the other fans in the system so that they wouldn't fluctuate speed and power, and I still couldn't hear the fan on the Vapor-X while it was set on auto.

Thermaltake Element T Gaming Case

Out of the cardboard box, Styrofoam, and plastic wrap, we have this case with its 'tactical appearance' which is really not that descriptive, if I had to choose words to describe its appearance, I would go with 'simple' with more of a 'functional' outlook. This case doesn't have all the bells and whistles a lot of cases now come with like most gaming chassis. Aside from the four red LEDs in the 200mm top fan, the only other light is the HDD status indicator.

Intel Releases 34nm SSD Firmware Fix - 2CV102HD

Chip-maker Intel promised to supply a fix for their October firmware update by the end of November and quietly missed that deadline. For certain Windows 7 installs it seems that once the TRIM firmware update was applied it would brick certain users' solid-state drives (SSD). The decision by Intel to stop the firmware's availability was due to various reports, including several disgruntled forum posts, that the software was bricking certain users drives. If you installed the firmware and had it work then you were able to get TRIM support and an instant performance boost on the sequential write speeds as the speeds have been increased to 100MB per second on the 160GB models. That is a 40 percent performance improvement over the previous firmware version. It seems a new 'fixed' firmware version was released late yesterday that solves the bricking issue without hurting overall drive performance. This is the fourth firmware update for the 34nm SSDs since they have been released. The firmware revisions in order are 02G2, 02G9, 02HA, 02HD. You'll want to download firmware revision 2CV102HD for the very best performance and stability.

Intel X25-M 34nm SSD Drive

Firmware revision 2CV102HD has several continuous improvement optimizations intended to provide the best possible user experience with the Intel SSD.

EVGA GeForce GT 240 SuperClocked Video Card Review

EVGA GeForce GT 240 SuperClocked graphics card

Two weeks ago NVIDIA released the GeForce GT 240 graphics card to help fill in the gap in pricing and performance between the GeForce GT 220 and GeForce GT 250 graphics cards. The GeForce GT 240 is nothing new in terms of features and performance, but the chip that powers it is made using the latest 40nm manufacturing process at TSMC. The GeForce GT 240 is aimed at the entry level discrete graphics card market at the fiercely competitive $99 price point. Taking a look at some of the key specifications over the past few generations of NVIDIA graphics cards you can see that the EVGA GeForce GT 240 SuperClocked should be slightly faster than the GeForce 9600 GT since it has more shader units (stream processors), but slightly slower than the GeForce 9800 GT as it has fewer shader units. When it comes to memory bandwidth the GT 240 has just a 128-bit bus, but as you can see the faster GDDR5 memory ICs make up for the narrow bus and the memory bandwidth is nearly identical to the GeForce 9600 GT and 9800 GT video cards.
