Netbooks soared in '09 but face challenge from ultrathin laptops
Netbook shipments worldwide are expected to have jumped by 103 percent this year compared to last year, although the fast growth rate could slow down in 2010 as prices for portable PCs fall, research firm DisplaySearch said on Tuesday.
Global netbook shipments are expected to total 33.3 million units this year, more than double the 16.4 million netbooks that shipped last year. Netbook shipments could reach 39.7 million in 2010, a growth rate of 19 percent compared to 2009.

BlackBerry service hit by second outage in a week
An outage hit BlackBerry smartphone service in the Americas on Tuesday night, operator Research In Motion confirmed. The outage is the second to affect users in less than a week.
"Some BlackBerry customers in the Americas are currently experiencing delays in message delivery," the company said in a statement. "Our technical teams are actively working to resolve this issue for those impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Court rejects Microsoft appeal and bans Word sales
A federal appeals court today ordered Microsoft to stop selling its popular Word software in less than three weeks, rejecting the company's appeal and confirming the ruling of a lower court.
Microsoft will comply with the injunction, a company spokesman said today. "We are moving quickly to comply with the injunction, which takes effect on January 11, 2010," said Kevin Kutz, the director of public affairs for Microsoft, in an e-mail.

Opera Software this week is offering a pre-alpha release of its Opera 10.5 browser and upgraded beta releases of its Opera Mobile 10 browser.

Obama selects Schmidt for top cybersecurity post
Howard Schmidt was named as the White House's cybersecurity coordinator on Tuesday, a job that was reportedly difficult to fill as the U.S. strengthens its computer security defense.
The appointment marks a return to government for Schmidt, who left his job as vice chairman of former President George W. Bush's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board in April 2003, saying he was retiring from government service to join the private sector.
