Richer version of Microsoft's Bing tries to leapfrog Google Maps
Microsoft is taking aim at one of Google's most popular services, Google Maps, with a richer version of its own online mapping service that was released in beta on Wednesday.
The new Bing Maps uses Microsoft's Silverlight multimedia technology to provide a smoother way to zoom in and out of cityscapes that appear as 3D-like images. The beta service also includes Microsoft's answer to Google Street View, which it calls Streetside.

Intel unveils energy-efficient 48-core chip
Intel is honing its sights on many-core chips that are far more powerful than today's dual and quad-core processors.
As expected, Intel took a big step in that direction today by unveiling a 48-core research chip that it says is 10 to 20 times more powerful than current the top end offering in its multi-core Core line of processors. Intel also noted that the experimental chip uses the same amount of energy as two household light bulbs.

Psystar still in businees of selling Mac clones, but without Apple's OS
Mac clone maker Psystar has agreed to pay Apple nearly $2.7 million in a partial settlement approved today by the federal judge who has overseen the 17-month case.
Psystar has also halted sales of Intel-based clones with Mac OS X preinstalled. Late Tuesday, its Web site showed all Mac clone models as "out of stock." The company's attorney confirmed that Psystar will no longer sell computers with Apple's operating system pre-loaded.

Will Acer be first to launch a Chrome OS netbook?
Acer may be the first manufacturer out of the gate with a Google Chrome OS netbook in the second half of next year, according to the latest Internet rumors. JT Wang, the computer manufacturer's chairman recently told DigiTimes that he was confident his company would be "the first vendor to launch [a] Chrome-based netbook" by next year.
