Texting while driving is dangerous. Really.
In another "Really? Someone paid to do a study on this?" news, theMichigan State Medical Society announced today that text messagingwhile driving is dangerous.

The news here, however, is exactly how dangerous it is. Apparently, ifyou text while you drive, you are six times more likely to becomedistracted and cause an accident. It is, apparently, the biggestdistraction while driving, according to some studies. The NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration puts all cell phone use, including texting, at the top of the list.

According to the NHTSA, distracted drivers are responsible for nearly80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes in the UnitedStates. Other distractions: reaching for a moving object inside thevehicle, looking at an object/person/happening outside of the car, talking with passengers, eating, reading, applying makeup, anger, fiddling with radio or other controls and getting lost.

On the plus side, a whopping nine out of 10 people responding to aHarris Interactive Poll in August 2008 said they believed texting orsending e-mails while driving was dangerous.

"Drivingwhile changing the radio is distracting enough, let alone taking youreyes off the road to type even a short sentence or two," said MSMSpresident Richard E. Smith, MD, a Detroit obstetrician/gynecologist."It's very dangerous."

Thirteen states ban texting while driving, and six have laws banningthe use of hand held phones while driving. Michigan has neither law onthe books, but state Sen. Samuel Thomas introduced a bill in theMichigan Senate in March that would fine people $100 and charge themwith a civil violation if, while driving, they were "engaging innonverbal communication with another person, playing a game, orentering data" with their cell phone.

USB 3.0 DisplayLink Products Shipping By Christmas 2010
We never really thought USB-connected monitors would take off, but takeoff they have. In the case of Mimo, the demand for them has soared sogreatly that they've been able to stay in business and thrive byselling secondary monitors that connect via USB alone. One of the maindrivers in making the whole USB monitor revolution tick is DisplayLink, and they're understandably excited about the possibilities that comealong with USB 3.0.

Today, USB 2.0 has a bandwidth limitation that hinders DisplayLinkproducts from being able to support extremely high resolutions andframe rates. Basic monitors can handle basic 2D tasks with relativeease, but start asking it to push 1080p, fast-moving multimedia througha clogged USB 2.0 cable and you run into all sorts of issues. USB 3.0clearly has a huge boost in bandwidth--right around 10x more--so it's nosurprise to hear that DisplayLink is already looking forward to sellinggear based on the new protocol.

According to a new report, at least one DisplayLink monitor prototypewill be setup and running at CES, and it will be using USB 3.0technology. The new chip will be able to take advantage of the speedboost, which will enable video transfers of up to 4.8gigabits-per-second. That could enable USB-connected monitors to easilydisplay high-definition video content when paired with an advanced GPU,and honestly, this should make DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort at leastsomewhat scared. After all, USB ports are on every PC you see, and USB3.0 ports will be hitting those next-gen PCs in short order. Once eventhe cheapest netbook on the market has access to a USB 3.0 port, thatvery netbook can then pipe out video to a massive monitor withouthaving to use a VGA or DVI port. Expect to see USB 3.0-basedDisplayLink products on store shelves by next Christmas.

Asus X77 Laptop To Have Core i5, Mobility Radeon HD 5730
We recently had the chance to review an Asus gaming notebook with amobile Core i7 within, and needless to say, we were rather blown away.If the trend continues, we're guessing the upcoming X77 will be just asimpressive. Of course, Asus has yet to come forward and confirm thatthis machine is in fact a product it plans to produce, but the evidenceis certainly mounting.

Fudzilla has discovered that the 17.3" gaming machine will soon beunveiled officially, bringing with it a Core i5-430M processor (32nmdual-core) along with a new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730. That modelnumber is a new one on us, but we're guessing that it will perform justunder the existing 5750 card. One tidbit we do know: the GPU willlikely rely on DDR3 memory and not GDDR5, presumably because this willbe sort of a "bargain" gaming machine.

Other known specifications (rumored, at least) include two 500GB harddrives, an eSATA port, HDMI output, 4GB of RAM and a 17.3" panel with a1600x900 resolution. We shouldn't have to wait too much longer to getthe official word from Asus, with an estimated street date of January2010 and a price of around 1000 Euros.

Rambler Socket Puts An Extension Cord In Your Wall Outlet
It has probably happened to you if you've ever owned a desktop LCD ordesktop tower: the curse of the not-quite-long-enough extension cable. It's pretty difficult to move a whole desk once you've got it set inplace within your home, but adding an extension cord doesn't take mucheffort at all. The only problem is that a bright orange extension cableis generally an unsightly mess when ran within the home, and we guessthis whole quandary is exactly what inspired Meysam Movahedi to createthe concept he did.

The Ramber Socket is a new twist on an old product: the typical AC walloutlet. Rather than simply allowing a socket to connect, this devicehas an in-wall box that contains 1.5 meters of extra wiring. If youneed a little more length to connect your gizmo to power, you can justroll it out to the length you need. Once you're done, a gentle pullwill enable it to recoil nicely back into the in-wall enclosure.

This is definitely one of those designs that make you wonder why youdidn't think of that, and with any luck, we'd imagine that these willhit home improvement stores really soon.

Cell Phone Radiation Debate Continues
We've heard numerous arguments to back up both sides of the cell phone radiation debate. Some research indicates they are safe, others disagree. Now, a new study is fueling the argument that cell phones could cause serious side effects. According to a 10-year study from the World Health Organization (WHO), there's a proven link between the long-term use of a cell phone and increased risks for brain cancer and tumors.

The study, headed by Dr. Elisabeth Cardis, shows an 18% increase in brain tumor development with long-term cell phone usage. The United States did not participate in the Interphone study but Senator Tom Harkin, the head of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has promised to look into the question of a link between cell phones and brain cancer.

In an attempt to help make cell phones safer, there are companies that offer what's known as a SAR Shield, which can attach to any cell phone and potentially reduces harmful radiation waves by upwards of 89%. The SAR Shield combines technology from the same material that's used to shield Stealth Bombers from radar detection and telecommunications fields into a flexible sticker that's no larger than the size of a nickel. This sticker absorbs the electromagnetic waves (radiation) emitted while your phone is in use. It's currently the only tested and FCC-approved device that's been proven to lessen the specific absorption rate by upwards of 89%.

SAR Shields sell for as little as $15.آ Based on tests from the ABC TV show 20/20, some of the country's most popular cell phones can exceed the radiation limit. According to reports from 20/20, the government-testing guidelines are so vague that a phone can pass the Federal Communications Commission's requirements when tested in one position and exceed those maximum levels when held in another position.

And if you were wondering where your beloved iPhone ranks, though it didn't make the top 20 highest or lowest list, it all depends.آ First gen iPhones are somewhere in the middle at a SAR of .974, while 3G iPhones are near the top at 1.38, though the new iPhone 3GS is more middle of the pack at .79.

Regardless of which argument you believe one thing is certain: the debate about cell phone safety will continue. Many experts say that it's hard to predict the long-term effects of cell phone radiation, especially since many people have only been using cell phones for the past five to ten years.
