Fennec, Mozilla's Mobile Browser, Is 'Days Away' From Launch
Recently, Jay Sullivan at Mozilla told the BBC that Mozilla's upcoming mobile web browser codenamed Fennec is just "days away" from being launched. The browser will initially be available for Nokia's N900 phone followed by other handsets. Sullivan further explained that the browser is currently going through final testing and could be released before the end of the year. The mobile browser has been in the works for the past year and a half. It is said to offer the ability to synchronize with the desktop version of Firefox, allowing users to take web pages that are open in their desktop browser with them on their mobile device. "At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone," Sullivan explained. Information sent through the cloud between a desktop and mobile device is encrypted for security.

Additional features of Fennec include tabbed browsing and an address bar that can double as a search box. The mobile browser is designed to scale pages to fit the device and will also support tapping the screen to zoom in on a page. Like Firefox, Fennec will offer add-ons that let people customize the browser to their liking.
The browser will initially be available for Nokia's N900 phone directly from the Mozilla website and then from Nokia's Ovi store. Mozilla is also working on versions for Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Google's Android operating systems. Apple users will have to wait even longer due to the fact that "Apple is very restrictive," as Sullivan put it. Currently, Apple only allows browsers based on its Webkit engine to be loaded on the iPhone. Firefox uses alternative technology.

LG Display's 42" HDTV Is Just 2.6mm Thick
Measuring ust 2.6mm thick, the newly designed slim 42" LCD panel integrates an edge-lit backlight system, proprietary optical film technology, a 120Hz refresh rate and an eye-popping 1080p native resolution. Back in May, LG broke this same record with panels that were 5.9mm thick, so you can definitely get a handle on just how quickly the space is shrinking.
Who knows--maybe we'll have TVs that are 0.1mm thick by this time next year, and we'll be buying TV cases in order to keep them from shattering during installation.

LG Display Unveils World’s Thinnest LCD TV panel measuring 2.6mmآ آ آ آ
Breaking the 3mm barrier in large LCD TV panel
Seoul, Korea (December 21, 2009) – LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE:LPL, KRX:034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it has developed the world’s thinnest LCD TV panel measuring 2.6mm.
The development of extremely slim LCD panel was possible by applying the company’s accumulated “slimming†technologies including the use of an ultra-slim, edge-lit LED backlight system and proprietary optical film technology.
The 42-inch panel weighs less than 4 kilograms — making it ideal for wall mounted TVs. Moreover, the new product offers 120Hz refresh rate technology with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution for clear and sharp image.
In May, LG Display broke the record by unveiling 42- and 47 inch LCD TV panels measuring 5.9mm - the world’s thinnest panels at the time. By nearly halving its record in just seven months, the company maintains its position as the technology leader in ultra-slim LCD panels.
Dr. In Jae Chung, LG Display’s CTO and Executive Vice President noted, “With the development of the world’s thinnest LED LCD TV panel that is only 2.6mm thick, LG Display has once again demonstrated its technical prowess to satisfy customer demand for high resolution and slim design products. We will continue to spur R&D activities in order to provide our customers and the market with the differentiated products that they desire.â€
LG Display will showcase the product and its newest cutting-edge display technologies in a private room at the Bellagio Hotel during the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010 in Las Vegas.

Three New OLPC XO Models Announced, XO 3.0 Aims For Sub-$100 Price
With anything, particularly in the consumer electronics realm, comes progress. Even for OLPC. This week, the nonprofit organization has unveiled an all new concept that could very well put it back on the mainstream map. The new design has a familiar mantra: it's create to "deliver robust laptop performance and innovative design for use in the most remote, poor and rural communities and at the lowest power and cost in the industry."
In fact, a grand total of 3 new machines are mentioned, all of which are detailed below. The good news is that at least one of them (the XO 3.0) will reportedly sport a price tag of under $100, and while we're understandably skeptical given the claims/reality of the original, there very well may parts that cheap in 2012 to make this one prove true.

The new versions of the XO laptop will be as follows:
- XO 1.5 – The XO 1.5 is the same industrial design as the XO 1.0. Based on a VIA processor (replacing AMD), it will provide 2x the speed, 4x DRAM memory and 4x FLASH memory. It will run both the Linux and Windows operating systems. XO 1.5 will be available in January 2010 at about $200 per unit. The actual price floats in accordance with spot markets, particularly for those of DRAM and FLASH.
- XO 1.75 – The XO 1.75, to be available in early 2011, will be essentially the same industrial design but rubber-bumpered on the outside and in the inside will be an 8.9â€, touch-sensitive display. The XO 1.75 will be based on an ARM processor from Marvell that will enable 2x the speed at 1/4 the power and is targeted at $150 or less. This ARM-based system will complement the x86-based XO 1.5, which will remain in production, giving deployments a choice of processor platform."
- XO 3.0 – The XO 3.0 is a totally different approach, to be available in 2012 and at a target price well below $100. It will feature a new design using a single sheet of flexible plastic and will be unbreakable and without holes in it. The XO 3.0 will leapfrog the previously announced (May 2008) XO 2.0, a two-page approach that will not be continued. The inner workings of 3.0 will come from the more modest 1.75.

hey guys... not really new here, more like really old here!
Hi,
I actually used to be on this forum back a few years ago... I was CompHobbyist then. Would have signed in on my old name but it seems my account's been inactive for so long the password reset form wouldn't work, and I'm not even sure I own the domain the registered email address is at, so looks like that one's gone for good!
Who's still around from the 03-05 era? I still talk to laggerzero on AIM once in a blue moon, I think I saw a Facebook update from LovelyCrap a while ago, and I recall a few others... Der Meister had just shown up recently when I sorta disappeared, saw a post from him when I signed into the forum. Is Bad Boy still around? Anyone else who used to frequent the semi-official IRC channel?
I actually work for Intel now (I do platform validation engineering for the Itanium and probably soon some Xeon processors), and haven't run Windows on my desktop since 06... I run FreeBSD on everything now.
EDIT: pretty sure I remember bob_on_the_cob too. You had an avatar of Bob the Builder next to an ear of corn then.

Cydle Combines GPS, HD Traffic, HD Radio, Video, Audio, Bluetooth, & More
Cydle, one of South Korea's biggest electronics makers, plans to make a big splash at the 2010 CES trade show with the announcement of a portable GPS system that has built-in HD Radio and free HD live traffic updates. The new T43H from Cydle is part of the company's line of wireless digital devices that combine navigation with entertainment, offering GPS, Live HD traffic updates, HD Radio, rich multimedia, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, black box, mobile TV, and more. “The car should be a haven,†said Woody Lee, U.S. director of sales, Cydle. “Whether a driver needs accurate traffic information and alternate routes to get somewhere on time, wants to watch a video of his or her family while on a business trip, or simply wants to enjoy a favorite tune, we provide all of that, at the highest quality, from a single device.â€

Cydle’s T43H is the "world’s first" portable navigation system with built-in HD Radio that offers free HD traffic information with real-time updates that Cydle claims are 10 times faster than other traffic message channels. This real-time information is refreshed automatically using an internal as well as an external antenna. In addition to navigation and traffic updates, the T43H functions as an entertainment device thanks to its high-resolution 4.3-inch screen and ability to play videos and audio and display pictures. The T43H costs $299 and does not require a subscription fee.
Cydle is also adding two additional GPS units to its lineup that combine a GPS unit with a multimedia player and wide touch screens. The T70 features a 7-inch screen and the T50 offers a 5-inch screen. Both units come with a range of options including HD Radio, Live HD Traffic updates, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobile TV, and black box.

The optional Cydle BX1 serves as a black box for the car. It keeps a running video of events while driving and updates every 30 seconds. If the G-force shock sensor detects an event, the BX1 will save the data from 15 seconds before and after the impact. The Cydle BX1 will be available in the United States in Q1 2010 for a suggested price of $149.
Last, but not least, Cydle’s new M7 MID (Mobile Internet Device) can function as an Internet search appliance, a digital photo frame, and a multimedia player for music and movies. It also has HDMI support and 8GB of memory that's expandable to 16GB. The M7 is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2010 for approximately $199.
