Nokia Only Getting Linux-Based OS Onto One Phone Next Year
Nokia still holds the lion's share of the cell phone market place, but that edge is quickly slipping away. Of course, the company is still selling an awful lot of low-end handsets to emerging markets, but it has no major players in the smartphone space that rival the Droid

VIA's Mobile-ITX Platform Is 50% Smaller Than Pico-ITX
When Pico-ITX hit the market in mid-2008, many figured that it would be quite some time before we saw a replacement shrink any further. Leave it to the folks at VIA to prove us all wrong. Today, the company is introducing its newest platform, one that's a whopping 50% small than Pico-ITX, which itself is quite a bit smaller than Micro-ITX.

The new platform is called Mobile-ITX, and at 6cm x 6cm, it promises to enable all sorts of next-generation devices. Applications for this mostly live in the medical and military market, but with converged devices shrinking all the time, we suspect it's only a matter of time before this finds use in the commercial world.

Mobile-ITX employs a modularized design that includes a CPU module card and an I/O carrier board, and CPU modules based on the Mobile-ITX form factor integrate core CPU, chipset and memory functionality and I/O that includes the CRT, DVP and TTL display support, HD Audio, IDE, USB 2.0, as well as PCI Express, SMBus, GPIO, LPC, SDIO and PS2 signals, through customizable baseboards. As for power consumption? As little as 5-watts, meaning that these are perfect for always-on scenarios.

VIA Mobile-ITX Brings FurtherMiniaturization and Greater Flexibility to Embedded Devices

Incredibly compact, 6cmx 6cm Mobile-ITX form factor is 50% smaller than Pico-ITX, enablesnext-generation embedded devices

Taipei, Taiwan 1 December 2009 - VIATechnologies, Inc, a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processorplatforms,آ today announced Mobile-ITX, the latest VIA-developed open formfactor specification for the creation of ultra-compact and portable embeddeddevices. Mobile-ITX defines a uniquely compact 6cm x 6cmcomputer-on-module specification designed to enable an easier and less resourceintensive development cycle for a range of ultra-compact, portable embeddedsystems.

Vertical market segments including medical, transportation and military embedded markets have evolved to demand greaterminiaturization and portability from today’s x86 platforms. Mobile-ITXaddresses the need for a simple, modular approach to portable IPC design, making it easier than ever to bring to market ultra-compact and lightweightdevices that offer comprehensive connectivity options and a rich, flexiblefeature set.

“With Mobile-ITX we have again pushed backthe barriers that limit just how small an embedded industrial PC can be,â€‌ saidDaniel Wu, Vice President, VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies,Inc. “Mobile-ITX enables the creation of a new breed of ultra-compact, portablenetworked devices suitable for a range of applications, particularly in modernmedical and military segments.â€‌

Mobile-ITX– The Science of Small

Extending VIA’s reputation as a leadinginnovator and creator of ultra-compact form factors, Mobile-ITX at 6cm x 6cm, is currently the most compact computer-on-moduleform factor on the market, an incredible 50% smaller than the successfulVIA-developed Pico-ITX form factor.

Mobile-ITX employs a modularized design thatincludes a CPU module card and an I/O carrier board. This offers greaterflexibility for developers who can simply drop in the CPU module to a customdesigned, application specific carrier board, negating lengthy developmentaldesign and testing phases.

CPU modules based on the Mobile-ITX formfactor integrate core CPU, chipset and memory functionality and I/O thatincludes the CRT, DVP and TTL display support, HD Audio, IDE, USB 2.0, as wellas PCI Express, SMBus, GPIO, LPC, SDIO and PS2 signals, through customizablebaseboards. In keeping with VIA’s signature low power philosophy,Mobile-ITX-based modules consume as little as 5 watts, ideal for always-on,mission critical systems.

This comprehensive range of advancedtechnologies can be implemented on a variety of Mobile-ITX compatible carrierboard designs that can be adapted to suit almost any environment, orapplication specific criteria. The CPU module I/O signals are mapped to twounique high density, low profile connectors on the under side of the module, with a distance between the CPU module and the baseboard of only 3mm, making itideal for ultra-slim system designs. The connectors can also withstandvibrations of up to 5Gs making Mobile-ITX systems suitable for in-vehicle andindustrial machining applications.

More details about the Mobile-ITX formfactor may be found at the VIA website where you can also find a detailed “Mobile-ITXForm Factorâ€‌ white paper:

The 2009 Audi Q5 to Include an Nvidia GPU
When the 2009 Audi Q5 "compact crossover vehicle" debuts this fall, it will feature an additional kind of powerful engine: Driving the car's audio/visual interface control panel will be an Nvidia GPU. The Q5 will include the latest generation of Audi's Multi-Media Interface (MMI), manufactured for Audi by Harman/Becker. Harman/Becker refers to the MMI as a "3G infotainment system":آ

"The Harman/Audi platform sets new benchmarks for automotive navigation, communication and wide-screen entertainment. A high-performance NVIDIA graphics processor ensures that navigation map images transition smoothly, even when the vehicle quickly changes direction. Driver orientation is enhanced by a three-dimensional landscape view that reproduces true-to-scale terrain. Photorealistic depiction of points of interest allows visual matching of key landmarks to the in-car display, and identification of commercial points of interest is enhanced with well-known brand logos. The display offers a bird's-eye view of more-distant destinations and features automatic close-up zoom at intersections."

"Available map media cover 43 European countries, the United States and Canada. آ Precise audio route instructions and voice commands for audio, telephone, address book and navigation functions are supported in eight languages. The system supports connection of external devices such as USB storage media or an Apple iPod; a jukebox function allows for creation of personal music playlists. The digital radio accepts both European Digital Audio Broadcast signals and U.S. satellite services. An integral four-band GSM cell phone supports Bluetooth connection and accepts a SIM card from a driver's personal phone."

There was a very brief mention of this on Nvidia's SLI Zone blog, which accidentally stated that an Nvidia GPU would be featured in "the new Audio [sic] Q5." Oops. There has been no mention yet of what specific GPU will be used.آ The blog went on to say:

"I'm not saying you can play ETQW in your car quite yet (wait for the hacks!) but this is really cool integration of powerful visual computing GPU that will revolutionize car navigation with full 3D acceleration."

We applaud the potential integration of current computer technology into automobile designs that purport to improve the driving experience. On the other hand, we're not sure the additional distractions for the driver are necessarily such a good idea; and we're leery of introducing yet another, potentially overly-complex technology with a temperamental history into our vehicles. We'd hate to have our car stuck in the shop so that its firmware can be updated and new drivers installed. Then again, playing a MMOG while stuck in traffic doesn't sound so bad.

My Taskbar won't work!

Hi Everyone,

On my Mum's Laptop (her work one), the taskbar doesn't work properly. When she minimises a window, it just disappears, and when you open a window or multiple windows, there is no icon to click for that window/s when in the taskbar.

Is there any way to fix this? I've tried fixing it, and she doesn't know what she did that might have caused it.

Feel free to ask for clarification of the issue.

Thanks in advance for your great help!

Barnes & Noble Stores Won't Get Nook As Early As Planned
Although Barnes & Noble plans to begin shipping its new $259 wireless Nook ebook reader today as planned, the demand for the product has been so strong that the company won't have any models available in-store for purchase or demonstration purposes until December 7. Originally, the nation's largest bookstore retailer said it would have the Nook in specific high-volume stores on Monday.

Mary Ellen Keating, a spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble, explained: "due to high demand, we are prioritizing pre-orders so that those people who ordered before Nov. 20 will receive them for Christmas." Right now, Barnes & Noble is planning on a week delay in shipping the Nook to stores.

On October 20th, Barnes & Noble unveiled its Nook ebook reader as a way to directly compete with Amazon's Kindle and a few other popular ebook readers from manufacturers such as Sony. Although the company hasn't revealed how many Nooks have been sold or how many would be available during the holiday shopping season, the Nook appears to be popular. An announcement from Barnes & Noble on November 20 informed consumers the Nook was out of stock for the holidays, proving that the demand for the Nook may be greater than the supply. According to the company, anyone who ordered a Nook after November 20 should not expect to receive the device until the week of January 4.

On Sunday, Keating said, "We're starting to ship this week and are committed to doing everything we can to ensure everyone who ordered the Nook before Nov. 20 will receive it for the holidays."

Text-a-Tip Programs Catch On, Help Police Solve Crimes
For years, police have struggled with an anti-snitching culture that has made witnesses afraid to come forward with information that could help solve a crime. Now, police from across the country are getting help from anonymous text messages sent to text-a-tip programs throughout the country.

Boston is one of the first cities in the country to heavily promote sending text messages to help solve crimes. Thus far, police in Boston have received more than 1,000 tips since the program began two years ago. Some of these tips have been helpful in finding key leads in at least four high-profile killings including the accidental shooting of a young boy by his cousin, an arson fire that killed two children, the shooting of a Boston teenager on her birthday, and the fatal stabbing of a man during a bar fight. An anonymous text also helped authorizes in Douglas County, Colo. thwart a potential Columbine-style attack after an anonymous text was received about a student's kill list, which led police to weapons in the child's home.

Officer Michael Charbonnier, who oversees the text-a-tip program in Boston, said people who live in high-crime neighborhoods are often afraid to talk to police due to fear of repercussions such as being hurt or killed by criminals.

"It's either call 911 or live with the bad guy. And if you call, there could be repercussions," Charbonnier said. "So when they have this option of texting us — knowing no one will know who they are — well, now, people give us license plate numbers, they give us names."

With the anonymous texting programs, police never see the tipster's name or telephone number because the tips are sent to a separate, third-party server where all identifying information is stripped out. An encrypted alias is then assigned to the tip before it is sent to police. Using this encrypted alias, police are able to send text messages back to the tipster to ask follow-up questions if necessary.

According to Charbonnier, the police promise tipsters confidentiality and anonymity. In honoring that promise, they have never tried to get a tipster's identity from the third-party company, either by asking for it or through a subpoena. Citing the confidentiality they promise tipsters, police would not release transcripts of the actual text messages they have received or give specifics relating to how the tips have led them to suspects.

Although it's hard to pinpoint how many texting programs are available around the country, they're definitely gaining in popularity. As one of the leading providers of technology for text-a-tip programs, Anderson Software has at least 400 law enforcement agencies as clients.

http://ragafoo.blogspot.com/

Here is the initial design for For the Asus Xtreme Design contest.

List of componenets

The idea behind this design is moving the components of the computer beyond the The case. That little window on the side of the case will not be the view that people get of these components. PC builder enthusiasts know that many of the components they get are an engineering marvels and also a work of art. Remember the feeling of unwrapping your first high end graphics card or Cpu cooler and just looking at? Why not display these items without the limitations of the case? That is the framework of this design. To show people that the intricate matrix of computer components is art and engineering masterpiece.

Amazon's Kindle Sees Record Month For Kindle Sales: Nook Who?
Think that Amazon's Kindle is worried about the Barnes & Noble Nook or any of the other lesser-known ereaders hitting the market lately? Guess again. Amazon has just announced that its ereader--which is viewed as a pioneer in the sector--has shattered sales records for a single month during November. And this is being calculated prior to Black Friday/Cyber Monday. And it's during a recession.

In case you aren't impressed yet, let's take a look at the numbers. The Kindle just lowered its price to $259 and introduced an International version, which has AT&T service and can roam internationally in over 100 countries. Aside from November 2009 being the best-selling month ever for the Kindle, it's also the $1 bestselling product across all product categories on Amazon. Yeah, it even tops the Zhu Zhu hamsters your children have been whining about. Amazon has yet to release the actual quantity sold, but needless to say it's pretty excited. It also doesn't hurt that the B&N Nook has been delayed somewhat for those who didn't pre-order early, and with Sony's connected Reader priced higher, there is little competition for the Kindle when people need an ereader by Christmas. Here's the company's official take on the news:

“Kindle is a great gift for anyone who loves to read and it’s flying off the shelves faster than any other product Amazon sells,â€‌ said Ian Freed, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “We’re seeing lots of people buying from one to a handful of Kindles as gifts for friends or family, as well as many businesses and other organizations buying Kindles in large quantities for their employees or customers.â€‌

JARI's 3-Seater Electric Vehicle Could Rival Tata Nano
Electricvehicles may not be in the exact same playing field as USB drives, mainboards and SSDs, but there's still something whiz-bang-y about 'emthat makes us drool. With Chevy's Volt inching towards production and a couple of otherall-electric vehicles already leaking out to the wealthy, where are wecommon folk expected to fulfill our own fantasies of driving around onthe open road without using a drop of fuel? JARI, we guess.

TheJapan Automobile Research Institute has developed and revealed theCآ·ta, which is being described as a "lightweight three-seater electricvehicle whose body is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). "There's no doubt that there is some question over this thing'sstability and safety, but we suspect that said worries are the least ofthe concerns right now. The tiny car has four wheels and is outfittedwith an in-wheel motor that's rated at 2kW; those motors are driven bya Li-ion battery setup. The total car weighs 661 pounds, with all but88 pounds being made up of those very batteries.

As of now, the little guy can cruise up to 125 kilometers on a fullcharge, but it certainly won't get there with the speed of a Ferrari. We're still waiting for a price, but we're guessing it'll be fairlycheap--maybe this is the all-electric rival that the Tata Nano has been waiting for?

Nikon D5000 DSLR Review

Nikon D5000 DSLR ReviewConsumer DSLRs with HD video capabilities are becoming more and more prevalent these days. As a result, manufacturers are constantly battling to find ways to differentiate themselves and their products from the others. Nikon's D5000 offers a few features that help set it apart from other options in the company's line as well as from the models offered by other manufacturers.

Like many DSLRs today, the D5000 offers Live View mode. It also has HD movie recording capabilities with the ability to capture up to 720p HD video at 24fps. While some cameras such as the Canon EOS Rebel T1i focus on a large, high-resolution display on the back of the camera, Nikon has gone a slightly different route and has opted to feature an articulating screen on the back of the D5000...

VirtualBox 3.1 Released

I'm not sure if anyone else is using VirtualBox, Sun's free VM solution, but a noteworthy update was released today.

Improvements mentioned in the changelog:

  • Teleportation (aka live migration); migrate a live VM session from one host to another (see the manual for more information)
  • VM states can now be restored from arbitrary snapshots instead of only the last one, and new snapshots can be taken from other snapshots as well ("branched snapshots"; see the manual for more information)
  • 2D video acceleration for Windows guests; use the host video hardware for overlay stretching and color conversion (see the manual for more information)
  • More flexible storage attachments: CD/DVD drives can be attached to an arbitrary IDE controller, and there can be more than one such drive (the manual for more information)
  • The network attachment type can be changed while a VM is running
  • Complete rewrite of experimental USB support for OpenSolaris hosts making use of the latest USB enhancements in Solaris Nevada 124 and higher
  • Significant performance improvements for PAE and AMD64 guests (VT-x and AMD-V only; normal (non-nested) paging)
  • Experimental support for EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface; see the manual for more information)
  • Support for paravirtualized network adapters (virtio-net; see the manual for more information)

CrunchPad Dreams Die As Partners Pull Out
Who didn't see this coming? Okay, okay, so maybe there actually were a few people out there holding out serious hope that the CrunchPad would indeed see the light of day, but we've been skeptical of the whole thing from the get-go. That said, it looks like the tablet was actually really, really close to going retail, but a long-winded explanation surfacing today from Michael Arrington has confirmed that the project is (at least for now) dead.

Reportedly, the CrunchPad was "ready to launch" just two weeks ago, with a demo device proving exceptionally stable. If you'll recall, the device has been in the works for 1.5 years, and Arrington was hoping to showcase it recently with Chrome OS and Windows 7 hacked on. Mass production was slated for early 2010, and everything seemed to be on track. Things were looking up. The tablet would be a huge hit. It might even steal some thunder from Apple's rumored tablet. But then, this.

Arrington noted that "entire project self destructed over nothing more than greed, jealousy and miscommunication." What's that mean? It means that Michael will "almost certainly be filing multiple lawsuits against Fusion Garage, and possibly Chandra and his shareholders as individuals, shortly." He blamed those parties for pulling out and possibly trying to renegotiate the contracts shortly before launch, but due to the trademarking process, he's sure that no one can go ahead and produce this without his say-so.

It's been a wild, wild ride, and for some reason, we don't think that this is really the end. A project that lasts 1.5 years doesn't just vanish from your mind. Something you poured love and effort into hangs around, and we're hoping that the differences involved can be pushed aside for the sake of progress. The tablet market needs a revolution, and this was just the device to do it.

Apple Caught Field Testing Fourth-Gen iPhone
This news shouldn't surprise anyone, certainly not in terms of location. Apple has begun field-testing the 4th generation iPhone in the San Francisco Bay Area. Developers of the iPhone app iBART, which is used to help commuters around the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), Pandav, have reported the finding via the Pinch Media analytics used in their applications.

The Cupertino-based company probably has engineers and testers using BART throughout the Bay Area.

Pinch Media's analytics breaks down customer usage by specific devices as referenced by the internal device ID numbers assigned by Apple. The original iPhone is iPhone1,1; the iPhone 3G is iPhone1,2, and the iPhone 3GS is iPhone2.1 This new device ID is iPhone3,1, which was first seen in beta versions of iPhone OS 3.0 way back in March, but wasn't seen "live" until now.

Apple similarly began testing the iPhone 3GS way back in October 2008 and Pinch Media saw the new device ID string for quite some time in their numbers before reporting it.

Typical of new iPhones, there is very little information about the device, at least yet. The biggest rumor is that AT&T may lose exclusivity for the hot app phone, with Verizon getting the device (and probably tons of defectors, if that happens) at the time of the next iPhone refresh in mid-2010.
