Elite Bastards review: XFX Radeon HD 5850 Black Edition 1GB

Having taken a look at a reference clocked Radeon HD 5850 board last week, we now have an opportunity to turn our attentions to what's available in the world of factory overclocked Radeon HD 5850 boards.آ More specifically, today we'll be shifting our focus to XFX's Radeon HD 5850 Black Edition, which follows this particular AIB's usual practice of sticking with a reference cooling solution, but making significant changes to core and memory clocks to boost performance as far as possible.آ Just how much of a benefit can this Black Edition part offer against a standard Radeon HD 5850?

As we mentioned in our introduction, XFX have chosen to stick with AMD's reference cooling solution for their Radeon HD 5850 Black Edition, which means that all of the exciting stuff is going on under the hood with this particular card.آ This good stuff comes in the form of a 765MHz core clock (a 40MHz boost over reference speeds) set against an even more impressive 1125MHz memory clock, a 125MHz boost over a standard Radeon HD 5850.

Kaspersky Lab utilizes NVIDIA technologies to enhance protection

Is running anti-virus and the like on your GPU the future of security software?آ Kapersky seems to think so, when it comes to the high-end server-side processing which powers some of their services at least.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the incorporation of new parallel computing technologies by NVIDIA into its infrastructure. In order to enhance client protection still further, the Company has started to use the highly efficient NVIDIA Tesla S1070 which is based on multi-core graphics processors.

NVIDIA Tesla GPUs are based on CUDA, NVIDIA’s computing architecture that enables its GPUs to be programmed using industry standard programming languages and APIs. Kaspersky Lab uses the Tesla S1070 1U GPU system to accelerate the intellectual services that define the similarity of files. The similarity services enable the identification of new files and define which file, or file groups, most closely resemble the unknown program received by the Company’s antivirus lab.

AMD ships over 800,000 DirectX 11 graphics chips

They may have been hard to come by, but despite shortages due to yield issues AMD have revealed that they've already shipped a huge quantity of DirectX 11 capable graphics chips, which could see them hit the one million mark before the year is out.

ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, said on Monday that it had shipped over 800 thousand of graphics processing units (GPUs) that support DirectX 11 application programming interface. The rather high number of rather expensive graphics chips sold during the global economic downturn emphasizes the interest towards discrete graphics cards for desktops and PC gaming in general.

The company said that so far it has shipped over 500 thousand ATI Radeon HD 5700-series graphics processing units code-named Juniper and over 300 thousand graphics chips known as Cypress that power ATI Radeon HD 5800-/5900-series graphics adapters. Thanks to partly resolved supply issues with 40nm chips, AMD’s graphics business unit seems to have high chances of shipping around a million of DirectX 11-supporting graphics processors this year.

First Left 4 Dead 2 game add-on announced

Already in need of more Left 4 Dead 2 action?آ Come early 2010, that's exactly what you'll be getting, courtesy of Valve's first add-on for the title.

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first game add-on for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), is in development and targeted for release in early 2010.

Dubbed "The Passing," the first game add-on for L4D2 brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.

Targeted for release in early spring, "The Passing" takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.

Intel six-core Gulftown CPU to be known as Core i7-980X?

Do you have your heart set on a six-core CPU as your big system upgrade for 2010?آ HEXUS has the latest speculation regarding Intel's (and to a lesser extent AMD's) plans.

According to this Intel-published slide from PConline, the chip will be marketed as Intel Core i7-980X (no Core i9, then). The clock-speed is rumoured to be 3.06GHz, backed up by 12MB of L3 cache and, of course, Turbo Boost technology.

Aimed at users who own an X58 board and want the fastest CPU money can buy, the six-core wonder will be based on the 32nm Westmere process and feature all the usual LGA1366 goodies.

Word has it that Intel is looking to pull in the release date to March 2010, perhaps beating AMD to the hexa-core punch, but expect to pay a standard Intel $999 for the privilege of owning one, though.
