Update from Intel's NAND Solutions Group - 34nm SSD Firmware Issue

I just noticed that the Intel NAND Flash memory group issued a new statement just now citing "by end of November" for a firmware fix for the screwed firmware version (02HA) that came out back in October. They also listed some instructions on what to do for those of you that own 34nm drives. I personally updated my drive from 02G9 to 02HA the day the firmware came out, but was lucky my upgrade went smoothly and didn't brick my drive.

Intel X25-M Trim SSD Drive

Intel has confirmed an issue with the firmware update process for 34nm (G2) Intel X25-M SSDs (80GB and 160GB). This predominantly affected Windows* 7 (64bit) users during or immediately after the upgrade process to 02HA firmware using the firmware update tool (version 1.3). Intel plans to release a fix for this issue by the end of November 2009.

Dell is not shipping i7 Studio XPS laptops

Consumers were able to purchase a Dell Core i7 Studio XPS 16 in September, though Dell cannot provide the machines due to "design problems" which remain to be seen in even the review samples of the notebooks. The shipping dates for the machines were originally one week after purchase, but are continually being pushed back still. You can see thread after thread about the delays on the Dell community forums, I'm sure there are plenty of people as curious as I am on the reason for the delays, as you can still purchase the i7 variation of the laptop.

After talking to the nice people in customer service, it seems that Dell can't give anyone any clues as to when the i7 Studio XPS machines will be shipped...Dell's site claims that there is an estimated delivery date on 4th December but few people think that Dell will come close to meeting that date. Others have been told 12th December.

DFI Patent Dual System Platform, Hybrid is Disclosed

Due to the serious issue of global warming, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, saving energy has become the responsibility of every global citizen. DFI is committed to developing energy saving products, not only to provide consumers a better platform, but also to do the best for the earth. Therefore, Hybrid platform was invented. Besides saving plenty of energy, Hybrid platform also brings consumers the benefits of time saving, space saving, and money saving. In addition, it is simple to use. Via a control panel, two systems can be easily switched and using condition can be known.

DFI Hybrid platform Motherboard

Hybrid platform, adopts the latest DFI patent technology. That is, a board combines a powerful platform of the current mainstream (P45 + ICH10R) and a green platform (NVIDIA ION). In other words, Hybrid has two platforms which operate completely independently. What is more, files can be shared between platforms. Through integrated hardware switch chips as well as network switch chips, Hybrid platform features a KVM and LAN switch on board. So Hybrid platform can be used with a monitor and keyboard/mouse, or with two sets of devices to work separately. This product will bring you the following four benefits: First, energy saving. More and more users need to turn on their computer for a long time; however at the same time they worry about high consumption of energy. While general energy-saving system can not satisfy users in terms of performance, DFI launches Hybrid platform to solve this problem. This platform can be turned on for 24 hours and will not result in high electric bills, but also renders high performance to meet users requirements.

Intel's six-core Gulftown is performing well

Intel's future six-core processor 'Gulftown' has begun popping up with some exciting overclocking results consistent among dozens of samples. Another highlight of the chip is the memory controller performance, expect triple channel DDR3 2133 or better on a desktop platform. And for the dual socket platform, replacing the skulltrail platform, just wait for dual gulftown's with six channel DDR3 2133 memory in parallel, that with overclocking capability upwards of 4.2GHz from a stock 2.4GHz is sure to have enthusiasts waiting patiently. AMD should watch out, as this architecture is another big leap in the right direction for Intel.

Good news, most of the samples hit close to 3.5GHz with regular voltages, and around 4GHz with basic "push up" measures (we'll avoid saying "overclocking" among the vendors). And this is with six cores and 12MB cache per chip, a full 50 per cent increase in both categories from the current LGA1366 45nm processors, with roughly the same thermal design power (TDP) rating as well. Oh yes, also don't forget the encryption acceleration as well as little reductions to latency penalties all over the system.

AMD VP visits Taiwan to seek more support from motherboard makers

AMD senior vice president and general manager for Products Group Rick Bergman arrived in Taiwan on November 16 to talk about AMD's latest roadmap with Taiwan PC, motherboard and graphics card makers, as well as seeking more support from them for equal competition with Intel as Intel has agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions, according to sources from motherboard makers.

Although some market watchers expect the settlement of all antitrust and IP disputes between the two firms will encourage more vendors to adopt AMD's products, the sources believe Taiwan makers are unlikely to change their views simply because of the settlement, since Intel currently still has the majority share of the motherboard market. Market demand for products is still the major index upon which motherboard makers make their decisions, the sources noted.
