Are nations hiring criminals for botnet attacks?

Nations that want to disrupt their enemies' banking, media, and government resources don't need their own technical skills; آ they can simply order botnet attack services from cybercriminals.

That's a point made in McAfee's new report "Virtually Here: The Age of Cyber Warfare," which draws from the opinions of about 20 experts, including William Crowell, former deputy director of the U.S. National Security Agency.

New HP hardware, tools address thin client concerns

Hewlett-Packard is trying to tackle concerns about the cost and complexity of thin-client computing with new products and tools announced Tuesday.

Proponents of thin clients say they can cut costs by allowing desktop programs to be deployed and maintained on a central server instead of locally for each user, and improve security because company data is stored in a datacenter instead of out in the network on PCs.

China rules Microsoft violated intellectual property rights

A Beijing court has ruled that Microsoft violated a Chinese company's intellectual property rights in a case over fonts used in past Windows operating systems, state media said Tuesday.

The Beijing Number One Intermediate People's Court this week ordered Microsoft to stop selling versions of Windows that use the Chinese fonts, state broadcaster CCTV said. Microsoft plans to appeal the case, a company representative said in a statement.

Adobe Systems will offer on Tuesday beta versions of upgrades to its core Flash Player and Adobe AIR technologies, with Adobe touting mobile device accommodations for the Flash Player.

The two products include Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2. Designers and developers can build rich Web content for the browser when running the Flash Player and for the desktop when using Adobe AIR, Justin Everett-Church, senior product manager for Adobe Flash Player, said. Final releases of Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2 are expected in the first half of 2010.

HP-3Com deal faces shareholder lawsuit

A shareholder lawsuit seeks to block HP's $2.7 billion bid for 3Com.

According to blog TechCrunch, a lawsuit filed last Thursday in a Delaware court claims 3Com is undervaluing itself. The action was filed by New York bankruptcy attorney David Shaev on behalf of 3Com shareholders.

Startups take SAP consulting to the cloud

A pair of startups, including one led by a former top SAP executive, are betting that SAP customers want more flexible ways to purchase consulting services and find answers to problems.

Greg Tomb, who was CEO of SAP North America before leaving the vendor early this year, recently formed Vivido Labs, which offers remote help-desk service provided by a roster of experienced SAP professionals, Tomb said.

Lawsuit claims HP PCs suffer constant lockups, crashes

A Colorado man has sued Hewlett-Packard, saying that its Pavilion Elite desktop computers are "inherently defective," and constantly lock up within 10 to 20 minutes of use.

The lawsuit, which was filed with a California federal court last Thursday, seeks class-action status that, if granted, would open the case to all HP customers who have purchased one of the allegedly defective PCs.
