Worldwide PC shipments returns to growth
Gartner says worldwide PC shipments have reversed a downward slump over the last three quarters. PC shipments over Q3 '09 rose 0.5% over Q3 '08, a significant improvement over the 5% and 6.5% declines in the previous two quarters, respectively. Gartner had previously predicted a 5.6% decline, in line with previous trend. However, they missed the mark by quite a lot - PC shipments actually grew by 0.5%.

Asia continues to increase - with China's PC shipments increasing an amazing 28.5%! US shipments show signs of recovery at 3.9% whereas EMEA continues to suffer.

Following a few hours after Intel's impressive Q3 results, and previous reports of unprecedented demand for ATI's Radeon HD 5000 family, the computer hardware industry may well be on its way to recovery. The upcoming Windows 7 launch, however, should not have a substantial impact on PC sales, Gartner predicts.

UPDATED: [Rumour] ATI Radeon HD 5900 arriving?
Though the ATI Radeon HD 5800 is barely three weeks old, there is already talk of a HD 5900 series. Nordichardware have "got word that the HD 5900 series is being prepared for launch". The have also quoted a driver mentioning "ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series".

Nordichardware speculates that the HD 5900 series will be a response to Fermi - a refresh of the HD 5800 much like RV790 and HD 4890 refreshed HD 4870. However, this is clearly open speculation and word of HD 5900 could mean several things.

UPDATE: Nordichardware is now reporting that Radeon HD 5970 is indeed Hemlock. So, instead of HD 5870 X2, the new branding is HD 5970. We can expect a slower HD 5950 to follow. No sources have been cited, but this is the latest rumour from Nordichardware.

More details next page.
