Microsoft's free Security Essentials antivirus software identified 98 percent of over half a million malware samples, an accuracy rating an independent testing company called "very good" today.
Germany-based AV-Test.org tested Security Essentials, the free software Microsoft shipped Tuesday, on Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), Vista SP2 and the final code of Windows 7, against two different collections of malware, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's two managers.

Update: Cisco pays $3B for videoconferencing vendor Tandberg
Cisco Systems has signed an agreement to buy videoconferencing vendor Tandberg for about $3 billion, it said on Thursday.
Tandberg's video endpoints and network infrastructure products will be integrated into Cisco's collaboration products, according to Cisco. When the deal is done Tandberg's CEO Fredrik Halvorsen will lead a new TelePresence Technology Group at Cisco, the company said.

Google has Chrome Frame plug-in for Firefox up its sleeve, says Mozilla
Google may intend to produce a Chrome Frame plug-in for Firefox, Mozilla's chief engineer said.
"The code is certainly there," said Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, referring to parts of the Chrome Frame source code that indicate Google could crank out a Firefox plug-in similar to what Google released last week for Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE).

Oracle fined over benchmarking claims
Oracle has been fined over claims it made in an advertisement about the performance of its software running on Sun Microsystems server hardware.
The Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), of which Oracle is a member, said it had asked Oracle to pay a $10,000 fine for the violation.

iSuppli: Chip sales to grow in 2010
Worldwide semiconductor sales will grow in 2010 as chip sales gain steam in response to stabilizing economies, analyst firm iSuppli said on Wednesday.
Semiconductor sales could grow by 13.8 percent on a year-over-year basis to reach $246 billion in 2010. Chip revenue will keep growing through 2012 and could reach levels of 2007, after which chip revenue skid began. Chip sales could total $282.7 billion in 2012; sales tallied close to $273.4 billion in 2007.

HP prepares new Integrity servers for Tukwila launch
Hewlett-Packard will make some significant updates to its Integrity server line next year to coincide with the launch of Intel's first quad-core Itanium processor, known as Tukwila, an HP executive said.
HP won't provide details about the new systems yet, but one analyst said HP may introduce a modular, bladelike design for more of its Integrity systems, much as it did last year for the Integrity NonStop. That could help to make the systems more energy-efficient and reduce HP's manufacturing costs.
