QUE ProReader To Be Sold At Barnes & Noble, Will The Kindle Stand A Chance?

In fact, it's aimed at a different market entirely than the Nook or Kindle, which are both aimed at general consumers. The proReader is aimed specifically at business users, with a size of 8.5" x 11", unlike most of the personal readers which are around 6" diagonally. We continue to believe in the value of brand integrations and partnerships between brands, media companies and talent."
We call it: wimping out.

Yes, Family Guy and any humor by its creator, Seth MacFarlane is definitely on the un-PC side, but still. Apparently the show is still looking for a corporate sponsor. Since stodgy old Microsoft wimped out, may we suggest cool, cultish Apple?

There was a preview posted to YouTube; take a look:

Fusion-io ioXtreme PCI Express SSD Sneak Peek!
If you've been watching our previous coverage of Fusion-io's almost too good be true PCI Express SSD products, you'll know that while the company makes no bones about the fact that their enterprise class cards are ridiculously expensive, they are also planning on delivering an "enthusiast" class card that will align better price-wise with the average end user just looking for killer storage performance.آ It appears the planning process is over today and though it was delayed a month or two, Fusion-io is now executing on that plan.آ

Fusion-io's ioXtreme and ioXtreme Pro cards just showed up to the Boston HH Test Labs and as we like to say around here, they're looking pretty .

Left:آ Fusion-io's ioXtremeآ - Right:آ Fusion-io's ioXtreme Pro

Left:آ ioXtreme Proآ - Right:آ ioXtreme - Click for high res.

We've received two cards for testing here; one is the ioXtreme Pro, that you can install multiple cards into a system for RAID configurations and the other is the ioXtreme for single-card installations.آ Save for the heat sink color coding and the "X" logo onآ the standard card'sآ backplate, it's almost impossible to tell the two cards apart, at least mechanically.

Fusion-io ioAdministrator Software

Fusion-io's ioAdministrator software allows for basic management and monitoring of the drive volume.آ You can also perform a low-level format of the drive and choose settings from maximum write performance with less total capacity, to max capacity with lower performance. (Update: 4:50PM this function is not available on the ioXtreme but only on the enterprise-class ioDrive product)

This software functions very much likeآ Fusion-io's standard ioManager software we showed you here.آ As
a quick-take on performance, we've formatted an 80GB ioXtreme Pro with maximum capacity settings and ran it through an ATTO Disk Benchmark run for grins and giggles.

ioXtreme Pro ATTO Performance

Simple, Half-Height PCI-Express Elegance - More details and a full review soon!

It's true, your eyes do not deceive you.آ You're looking at a product that offers 300MB/sec average write throughput and 750 - 800MB/sec of average read throughput.آ We're going to strap on a drool bib and get back to testing these bad boys a bit more. RAID 0 anyone?آ Stay tuned!

The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ430N notebook which has an onboard nVidia GEForce 7400 GO graphics card.

I used to get the "NVIDIA Control Panel" menu option in the "Right Click" context menu but the same has vanished ... and I am seeing Graphics options of "Intel" instead ... Intel Graphics are really very poor and will not allow me to play games which require 3D graphics acceleration ...

I tried installing "nVidia Display Drivers" but in vain. All I am getting is an error: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

If I am installing the original display the installation completes in less than a minute and the display driver does not show up in the "Device Manager" and not even in Control Panel.

I tried getting help from Sony eSupport but nothing and noone proved helpful.

Can someone pls. help me with this?

Thanks,

~Jaspal

CPU Water Cooler noise?

Out of nowhere, my system started to make this noise. And it kind of comes and goes. I opened my case to try to solve where the noise is coming from. I believe I narrowed it down to the water cooling system. When it decides to make the nosie, it sounds like chirps, like from what a cricket would make. Has anyone ever heard of an issue like this?

If the cooler is going bad for some reason (it's only a year or so old) how much would it cost to replace just one piece?

I don't know much about water cooling, unfortunately. However, I need to learn lol. I bought my system from Alienware (just for warranty reasons and even still I wish I would've just built from scratch). I'm pretty techy with troubleshooting anything else besides this : / haha figures. So I guess it's time for me to learn. I've just been so cautious with it because I dont' know how to install it properly : (

Verizon Leaves The Door Open For Apple & The iPhone

Not long ago, Verizon Wireless launched an aggressive ad campaign against the iPhone. That doesn’t mean Verizon is completely moving on and has no interest in the iPhone, however. During Verizon’s third-quarter earnings conference call yesterday, Verizon’s chief executive Ivan Seidenberg said his company would be interested in selling the iPhone.

“We obviously would be interested at any point in the future that they would be interested in having us as a partner,â€‌ Seidenberg said. “This is a decision that is exclusively in Apple’s court.â€‌

Meanwhile, Verizon will focus on the handsets it does offer, most notably its new line of smartphones including RIM’s new BlackBerry Storm 2 and the upcoming Motorola Droid. The company also plans to offer Palm handsets early next year. “Our view is to broaden the base of choice for customers, and hopefully, along the way, Apple, as well as others, will decide to jump on the bandwagon,â€‌ Seidenberg added.

آ

Other notable pieces of information from the earnings call include the fact that Verizon added a net of 1.2 million wireless subscribers during the quarter and its wireless unit continues to be profitable despite the fact that consumer interest in cheaper prepaid plans is growing. Additionally, Verizon plans to eliminate 8,000 jobs in the second half of this year with additional cuts to follow. Many of these cuts will be in the wireline unit.

Finally, we learned Verizon plans to offer faster wireless data for laptop card users in 25-30 cities using Verizon’s new 4G network by the end of next year. Phones that will take advantage of 4G speeds will take even longer.

Graphics Processors Boomed in Q3; Q4 Sales Expected To Be Strong
Market analysis firm Jon Peddie Research has released its report on graphic processor sales in the third quarter. According to the data, the strong Q2 rebound was no one-time event; GPU sales continued to climb into Q3 and are expected to rise further in Q4. Intel, AMD, SiS, and VIA all saw their market share increase, with AMD leading the pack. Matrox was the sole exception; its share of the GPU market has dropped to 0.0 percent according to JPR.

AMD picked up 1.4 percentage points of market share; Intel grew its share by 1.6 percentage points, and NVIDIA managed to lose 4.3 percent market share (down to 24.9 percent from 29.2 percent). Nevertheless, Team Green still shipped slightly more GPUs this quarter than last; the company's number of units shipped rose by 3.3 percent. Both SiS and VIA snatched significant pieces of the market for themselves (relatively speaking); SiS improved from 0.4 percent market share to 1.1 percent; VIA jumped from 0.8 percent to 1.5 percent.

The above graph details growth in total number of units shipped as opposed to percentage of market share. Strong growth in all corners, save for NVIDIA's—the company's fortunes may improve thanks to increased availability of ION-based products, but AMD's Radeon HD 5000 series has its rival in a tough spot. NVIDIA has options—it could slash prices on the existing GeForce 200 series—for example and undercut its competition just in time for the Christmas holidays. It's even possible that the company intends to introduce 40nm flavors of its current GTX 275 and 285 series, at correspondingly higher clockrates. Such a move would essentially be a stop-gap, which is why it seems unlikely, but if NVIDIA wanted to keep its Fermi architecture at higher price points initially, it could make sense to introduce a new, faster GeForce 2xx card to hold the lower market tiers.

Back in the here-and-now, notebook/mobile GPU's led the industry. Shipments of notebooks with discrete graphics rose by 36 percent quarterly, while notebooks/netbooks with integrated graphics grew 27 percent. Looking ahead to Q4, Peddie expects a strong finish, but without the sales jumps we saw in Q2 and Q3. "The channel is full and the products in it will have to be sold off before the OEMs and their resellers take a chance of seeing the channel becoming overstuffed. That suggests that while Q4 is typically a good quarter for PCs, the quarter-to-quarter growth in Q4 may not be as robust as Q3. Graphics are a great leading indicator," Peddie said, "The graphics go in before the PC is built or shipped."

The Motorola Droid Won’t Be The Only Android 2.0 Handset

If you’ve been following news and announcements surrounding the Android operating system, you may have picked up on the fact that Google hasn’t announced Android 2.0 or the SDK. An official announcement hasn’t stopped Verizon from talking about this new OS, however. In fact, Verizon has said the upcoming Motorola Droid will run Android version 2.0. Word on the street says this much-hyped new Android phone will officially be announced tomorrow, October 28.

Two other recently released Android smartphones, the Samsung Moment and the Motorola CLIQ still run older versions of Android. Motorola has customized the interface on the CLIQ, but it’s still not Android 2.0. Looking at it another way, Verizon and Motorola are talking about Android 2.0 but Sprint and Samsung are still stuck at version 1.5.

آ

The differences in version availability led Sascha Segan over at Gearlog to wonder if Motorola was getting preferential access to version 2.0. Thankfully, Segan was able to confirm that other manufacturers also have access to Android 2.0. Most notably, HTC confirmed they’ve had Android 2.0 in-house for a while now and are working on developing future devices that will run on this platform.

We’ve seen preferential treatment in the wireless industry and plenty of exclusive deals in the past, so why is the fact that multiple manufacturers are working on Android 2.0 devices important? This information is significant because Android has positioned itself as an open OS. In order for it to maintain this status, Google must not play favorites, and we’re glad to hear this doesn’t appear to be the case.
