Polaroid Makes A Comeback: New One Step Cameras Coming Next Year
Remember 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back?' We're not saying this comeback is anywhere near that monumental, but Polaroid is a pretty huge brand in the grand scheme of things. It's an icon in the consumer electronics/digital imaging industry, and while it certainly peaked years ago, there's nothing like a second wind to get consumers buzzing again. After filing for Chapter 11 and being picked up by Summit Global Group, it seems the company is itching to return the brand to its rightful place atop the throne.

Dyson Re-Invents The Fan With Air Multiplier, Charges Dearly For It
Dyson. It's a name generally linked to wild (and wildly expensive) vacuum cleaners, but today the company is doing something a little different. Er, a lot different. The only other diversion for Dyson in recent memory from its core product group was the Airblade, a commercial hand dryer that blasted water from your hands without requiring your to hit any buttons or touch any germ-infested towel dispensers. It's that same wind-blowing idea that's passed along to the firm's first "bladeless fan," the Air Multiplier.Without

Snow Leopard Could Eat Your Data, But Apple's Working On A Fix
Apple prides itself on providing operating systems that "just work," though some are saying OS X 10.6 (its latest version) "just works against you." Too harsh? Maybe, but there's no denying that the latest bug is one that's simply too large to stay quiet about. For years, OS X was as stable a consumer OS as the world had ever seen; by and large, the system never really caused users any major issues, and security concerns were practically nil. With the introduction of Snow Leopard, however, more bugs than ever

But with the increased performance potential of today's notebook components and their portability (LAN party anyone?), high-end gaming notebooks are becoming increasingly popular with the gaming crowd.
That said, you still won't see the same performance potential from a gaming notebook over a gaming desktop; and you'll typically pay more for the same level of performance from a notebook. Take for example the Eurocom M98NU XCaliber gaming notebook. Not counting the just-launched Intel Core i7 Mobile processor family, the M98NU XCaliber uses the speediest mobile CPU available (the 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300) and a pair of the fastest mobile GPUs (the Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M in SLI mode). The M98NU XCaliber also comes with 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM, two hard drives (one of which is an SSD), a Blu-ray drive, an 18.4-inch display, an integrated webcam, a biometric fingerprint reader, Bluetooth, and a 7-in-1 card reader. With such a fully-loaded system, its lofty $5,720 price tag is somewhat understandable.

Snow Leopard Could Eat Your Data, But Apple's Working On A Fix
With the introduction of Snow Leopard, however, more bugs than ever are surfacing. Some of it probably has to do with the wider customer base that Apple has gained with its surge in popularity, but there's just no excuse for having a bug that literally consumes a user's data if they make one wrong move in the Guest Account. And mind you, this bug is still present even after 10.6.1.
As the story goes, users upgrading their Apple system to 10.6 could actually delete all of their data by entering the Guest Account at the wrong time. Users all over the Web have reported that entering the Guest Account would cause the system to hang, and when the forced an exit, their main profile greeted them with no user data at all. Documents, media, everything--just gone.

Of course, the easy fix is to simply disable the Guest Account, but what if that's a feature you routinely use? After widespread outrage, Apple has come forward to acknowledge the problem and promise a fix. In typical Apple fashion, it asserts that the problem only occurs in rare cases, but still, this is a huge, huge issue. If you don't backup your data, and you accidently surf over to the Guest Account in Snow Leopard, you just might lose all of your data. Not cool. Oh, and considering that Windows 7 launches next week, the timing here couldn't possibly be worse for Apple (or better for Microsoft, as it were). Might a new PC vs. Mac ad be on the horizon?

Updated Flip MinoHD Pocket Camcorder Doubles Its Recording Time
One of the hottest new product categories of late is the inexpensive, high-definition (HD) pocket camcorder--and sometimes it feels as thoughآ almost every day another companyآ starts making them. Pure Digital Technologies--manufacturer of one the very first pocket camcorders to come to market--isn't resting on it laurels while the competition heats up: the Cisco-owned company has announced today the release of its second-generation Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder.
The biggest changes to come to the Flip MinoHD are a doubling of its built-in storage capacity and the inclusion of a larger-sized screen. Whereas the previous generation Flip MinoHD has 4GB of memory (for one hour of recording time) and a 1.5-inch (528x132) screen, the new version of the camcorder has 8GB of memory (for two hours of recording) and a 2-inch (960x240) screen. Another change is a slightly updated, rounded design and a brushed-metal finish. If you want something a little more stylish, you can choose a custom painted finish from a large selection of designs or even upload your own image to appear on the camcorder's faceplate. The new Flip MinoHD also now sports an HDMI-out port.Even with these additions, the Flip MinoHD still maintains its lightweight, sleek form-factor. Other elements of the camcorder also stay the same with the new model, including its video recording resolution of 1280x720 (720p), fixed-focus lens, 2x digital zoom, built-in wide-range omni-directional (mono) microphone, integrated speaker, touch-sensitive capacitive buttons, and an internal Lithium-Ion battery that is rated to last 2 hours on a full charge.
From a specifications perspective, the Flip MinoHD is very similar to the larger form-factor Flip UltraHD. The most significant differences between the Flip MinoHD and the Flip UltraHD are that the Flip UltraHD has a removable battery, a stereo microphone, its form factor is a bit larger and heavier, and it uses physical buttons instead of capacitive ones. Curiously, the new Flip MinoHD sells for $229.99, while the Flip UltraHD currently sells for a lower $199.99. Perhaps the biggest detractor of the nearly all pocket camcorders--and not just the Flip cameras--is the lack of image stabilization. Even the JVC Picsio ($199.95), Creative Vado HD ($179.99), and Sony Webbie HD ($169.99), don't have image stabilization. One of the few (perhaps only) pocket camcorders to include integrated image stabilization is the Kodak Zi8 ($175.95). With the exception of the Creative Vado HD, all of these other pocket camcorders can record video at 1080p--as opposed to the Flip MinoHD's 720p recording resolution.
All Flip camcorders come preloaded with the FlipShare software for "organizing, editing and sharing videos." A new version of the software is due out soon, which adds a number of new features, such as "a number of new organization tools and user controls" and the ability to upload videos directly to Facebook (the ability to upload directly to MySpace and YouTube is already in the current version). The new version of FlipShare will also include Magic Movie--a feature that "automatically trims and arranges a user's selected video content into their [sic] own movie." The updated version of the FlipShare software will be available for both Windows and Mac PCs, and will work with all current Flip camcorders.

If you're in the mood for a laptop that more than fits the phrase "desktop replacement" but isn't built by an OEM like Dell (or if a system from Round Rock simply doesn't pack enough awesome from your tastes), the folks at BFG Technologies have built a laptop to complement their high-end "Phobos" desktop system. Multiple audio ports, USB, and eSATA on the right side...

Don't overlook the notebook backpack, by the way. Finding a laptop bag built for an 18.4" screen is not an easy task. Currently, BFG is offering the Deimos for 10 percent off retail, provided you order in the month of October.
It's not cheap, but if you've got the need for a mobile system that can handle anything, Deimos looks to be a serious contender. As an added bonus, it'd make a heck of a stocking stuffer.

Dyson Re-Invents The Fan With Air Multiplier, Charges Dearly For It
Without a doubt, this is the most high-tech fan the world has ever seen, though it'll probably only be found in homes bigger than most could imagine. In a world where $5 fans from the local dollar mart are more than adequate for most, James Dyson and Company have decided that there's a luxury need for a blade-free fan that costs upwards of $300. You read that right, a $300 fan.
Put simply, the 10-inch version relies on fans held within a column to generate oodles of blowing air, and there are no blades there to dice up your fingers. Dyson claims that the fan can expel 119 gallons of smooth and uninterrupted air every second--impressive, indeed. If you're curious about specifics, air is sucked in the unit's base and then forced up into the oop amplifier and accelerated through the 1.3mm annular aperture, creating a jet of air that hugs the airfoil-shaped ramp. When everything comes together, you're left with an uninterrupted flow of cooling air.

It's available as a 10" model in blue and iron colors for $299.99, while the 12" model will cost $30 more and ship in iron and silver. So, anyone snagging one of these for Christmas? No one?

LG Unveils Solar-Powered e-Book Reader
LG Display has unveiled a solar-powered e-book reader. Given the fact that the electronic paper these readers use already provide really long battery life as they draw power only when the page is being turned, this could mean no recharging necessary --- ever. All right, all right, on sunny days, anyway.
That's because the solar cell in the new device will extend the running time of the e-book’s battery by a day for every four to five hours of exposure to the sun. However, according to LG's press release, they won't be ready to commercialize the reader, or the panel, until 2012.

Right now, the solar panel used in the prototype has an efficiency of 9.6 percent; LG is aiming to increase this to 12 percent next year and 14 percent by 2012. At that point LG feels the panel will be ready for commercialization.

Polaroid Makes A Comeback: New One Step Cameras Coming Next Year
In an announced made this week in Hong Kong, Summit Global is looking to take advantage of its 5-year license agreement for use of the Polaroid Brand by introducing a few new products in 2010, and yes, vintage/retro lovers should take notice. For starters, that film-based one-touch camera that made the company famous (you know, "shake it like a Polaroid picture") is getting a refresh, and the One Step Camera will still rely on actual film. If all goes well, the cam should hit the market in mid-2010, with color and black-and-white film available.

Also, Summit Global stated that a Polaroid TWO model would also land next year, describing it as the "digital version of the traditional camera that produces instant digital photos." We're pretty attached to our DSLRs at this point, but we can't help but be excited about this. If for nothing more than novelty's sake, we'll be thrilled to see new Polaroid cameras on the shelves. They always said history repeated itself, right?
