OCZ Zee Flash Drives Announced

Today OCZ announced the release of its new Zee line of basic USB 2.0 flash drives targeted at consumers who are looking for affordable portable storage. The Zee drives come with a black lightweight case with a removable cap and range in size from 2GB to 16GB. OCZ is touting the Zee drives using words like "economical" and "affordable" and, with little other specs to be had, you can expect the drives to be pretty basic and good for simple and lightweight storage with no frills. With students already heading back to school the Zee drives might be an ideal product where price is a consideration. However, OCZ hasn't disclosed what the pricing or availability on the drives is going to be.

Noctua LGA1156 Free Upgrade Mounting Kit

Noctua wants you to be able to use its existing CPU coolers on the upcoming Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors when they are released here in the next few weeks. Obviously, upgrading to a new socket format requires a new motherboard and in this case, the mounting setup is not compatible with previous LGA sockets from Intel. Noctua is offering the NM-13 mounting kit which will enable you to use any Noctua cooler made since 2005 on socket LGA1156 motherboards. You can take advantage of this free offer by going to Noctua's web site and filling out an online form. Not surprisingly, Noctua asks that you provide proof of purchase in the form of the original invoice for both the cooler and either a LGA1156/LGA1366 mainboard or LGA1156/LGA1366 CPU. Noctua even makes it easy in case you no longer have the original CPU cooler invoice with details provided on the form web page.

CM Storm Sentinel Advance Gaming Mouse Officially Released

Cooler Master has announced the release of the CM Storm Sentinel Advance gaming mouse which it first demoed at Computex back in June. The Sentinel Advance features an ergonomic, muscle-forming design with a solid grip and ultimate control. Two years in the making, the Sentinel Advance uses a twin-laser 5600 DPI sensor combined with real-time tracking technology to ensure deadly accuracy while gaming.

The mouse comes with a graphical user interface which can be used to build profiles to control such features as sensitivity ranges, rapid fire modes as well as allowing you to be macros and scripts which can then be stored in the 64K internal memory; this allows up to five different profiles to be stored and then used on any computer with the need for additional software. The Sentinel Advance can also be customized using the included weights to get the feel just right. Additional customization can be achieved using Cooler Master's Octoshade technology to change the LED colors and lighting effects. That gives you the ability to color-code different profiles or just show off your mouse with a little extra bling. Another cool item is the inclusion of a small OLED screen on the top of the mouse you can use to upload your clan logo or other image.

There was no word on pricing or when the Sentinel Advance will become available in stores.

PS3 Slim: No PS2 Games

After the worst kept secret in the gaming industry was finally announced, it has surfaced that the new PS3 Slim will have no PS2 backwards compatibility. Lack of backwards compatibility is nothing new, but has been a bit of a disappointment since the 40GB PS3 Fat model was released. John Koller, SCEA's director of marketing says that 80 to 90 percent of PS3 owners purchased the console to play PS3 games, which is fair enough, but it looks like people will be keeping their PS2's around to appease their Jak & Daxter addictions. It's not mentioned, but assumed that the PS3 Slim will be backwards compatible with PS1 games, so your Final Fantasy VII missions are safe.

AT&T Had No Choice But to Kill Google Voice App

As many of you may have heard, a Google Voice app was rejected by Apple for the Appstore earlier this month. Speculation is rampant that AT&T forced Apple to kill the app, and it would be hard to dispute that. With all of the features available through Google Voice, AT&T couldn't take that chance. With slumping revenue and lackluster performance in nearly all areas except data plans, AT&T needs all the help it can get. With the ability to make free calls and send free text messages, Google Voice could take a big bite out of AT&T profits. However, at a time when wireless carriers face ever increasing scrutiny from the government, AT&T may not be able to hold out much longer.

Linux Kernel Attracting More Developers

The Linux kernel is one of the largest Open Source projects currently out there, with contributions coming from individual programmers to big corporations. The good news is that the number of contributors is increasing. A report published by the Linux Foundation indicates that the number of developers has grown by 10 percent since the study done in 2008. Companies like IBM and Intel help make up the nearly 70 percent of contributions made by companies. With the number of developers contributing to the development of Linux, the various operating systems based on the kernel will continue to see improvements across all platforms.
