NVIDIA BIOS Editor - NiBiTor Version 5.0 Released
NVIDIA BIOS Editor (NiBiTor), the ultimate tool for NVIDIA video cards tweaking, was updated today towards version 5.0. Using NiBiTor graphics card enthusiasts can change the boot up message text & color, GPU/shader & memory clocks, hidden features like SBA (Side Band Addressing) and much more. All this is to gain some extra performance or just to customize your card the way you want it. This new version is build upon the logic of the previous version, with some minor fixes. It adds support for a couple more new NVIDIA video cards (the full list is below) and an Voltage IC Option in the program.

New Heatsink Material - Copper-diamond Alloy
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed a new material which allows better cooling than the conventional copper and aluminum solutions. To achieve this result, diamond powder has been added to metallic copper. Diamond conducts heat five times better than copper.

The result is a bond with 1.5 times the heat conduction of copper. Another advantage is that the material does not expand too much when heated, otherwise it couldn't be used in electronic devices.

Buffalo Introduces Slim External Blu-Ray Drive
Buffalo's optical drive line-up has been updated to include a new model, the BRC-P258U2 external Blu-Ray drive. The drive measures 141 (W) x 23 (H) x 155 (D) mm and weights 370 grams, has a 4.5 MB buffer, a USB 2.0 interface, and can read Blu-Ray discs at 2x and write DVD-R/+R SL at 8x, DVD-R/+R DL, DVD-RW/+RW at 8x, CD-R at 16x and CD-RW at 10x.

According to its maker, the BRC-P258U2 should already be hitting stores in Japan with a price tag of about $218.

ZOTAC AC Accelero EXTREME GeForce GTX 275 Spotted
It seems that ZOTAC has also borrowed Arctic Cooling Accelero EXTREME VGA cooling for some of its high-end graphics cards. Soon enough ZOTAC will make an announcement for its third GeForce GTX 275 card, the Accelero equipped ZOTAC GTX275-896D3 with 896 MB. The upcoming card is based on the P897 PCB with a 6+1 phase power design, a 448-bit memory interface, DirectX 10 and 3-way SLI support. In contrast to the GALAXY GeForce GTX 275 with AC, the ZOTAC card will come with stock frequencies - 633 MHz core, 1404 MHz shaders and 2268 MHz for the memory. Zotac's Accelero-powered GTX 275 is expected sometime this month, price is yet unknown.

Sun Microsystems Rejects IBM Buyout Offer
In March IBM was reported to be in the midst of negotiating to acquire Sun Microsystems. On the time of the publication there was no more to talk about, but on Saturday IBM finally made a formal bid of $9.40 a share for Sun, or a deal that would have been valued at about $7 billion. Unfortunate for IBM, Sun rejected the offer and has terminated IBM's right for exclusive merger talks, making Sun open for other merger candidates. IBM, in return, withdrew its buyout offer. Two reasons stay behind Sun's decision, one being the belief that the bid was too low, and the other being the terms of agreement, which give IBM too much flexibility in walking away from the deal. It is unclear if a second bid will be proposed by IBM, or will the negotiation between the two companies continue. Representatives from both IBM and Sun declined to comment on an unannounced information.

GALAXY Intros Custom Overclocked GeForce GTX 275 Card with 896 MB GDDR3 Memory
GALAXY, well known for its highly customized video cards, has once again developed a GeForce GTX 275 card that feels a bit different than stock cards. The new GALAXY GeForce GTX 275 comes with a huge cooler, developed by Arctic Cooling. That's the AC Accelero EXTREME with three 80 mm PWM fans, 5 heatpipes and 107 fins, enough to cool the overclocked to 650 MHz core, 1475 MHz shader and 1200 MHz memory card and even sufficient for further overclocking. The card also uses self designed PCB and elements desing with digital PWM and digital MOSFETs. It has two BIOS chips and is bundled with GALAXY's Xtreme Tuner software for BIOS recovery, fan speed, and overclocking adjustments. The memory capacity is 896 MB GDDR3. There's no public information on pricing and availability date.

Researchers Develop Gene Viruses to Build a Better Battery
Last week Reuters reported interesting information on a new virus that can be used to create batteries that can last three times as long as current lithium batteries.

Researchers who have trained a tiny virus to do their bidding said on Thursday they made it build a more efficient and powerful lithium battery. They changed two genes in the virus, called M13, and got it to do two things: build a shell made out of a compound called iron phosphate, and then attach to a carbon nanotube to make a powerful and tiny electrode.
Such an electrode could conceivably make more powerful memory devices such as MP3 players or cellular telephones, and are far more environmentally friendly than current battery technologies, said Angela Belcher, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology materials scientist who led the research.

Intel Finds a New Material to Make Transistors, Tries for Cooler Processors
A quick and brief report on Innovation@Intel claims that the company's engineers have discovered a way to make transistors using new silicon substrate and thus reduce the heat and voltage output of future processors. The new transistors run far cooler - at about آ½ the voltage, consuming only 1/10th the power of today's transistors.

Intel recently disclosed advancement details on a P-channel transistor, built on a silicon substrate, that makes use of compound semiconductors, also known as III-V materials because they are made of elements that straddle silicon in the periodic table, silicon being in column IV. This research resulted in the highest performing P-channel transistors reported to date. A year earlier, Intel described III-V N-channel transistors, also built on a silicon substrate. When combined, these two results could form the building blocks for CMOS logic circuits, which use both N-channel and P-channel transistors. Potentially suitable for future microprocessors, they run far cooler - at about آ½ the voltage, consuming only 1/10th the power of today's transistors.

The market for telehealth and home health monitoring is predicted to grow from $3 billion in 2009 to an estimated $7.7 billion by 2012.

Albatron Starts Selling ATI Radeon Video Cards
Albatron, an official NVIDIA partner, has gently started producing cards from the red camp without making any announcements. So far Albatron was NVIDIA exclusive, but a few more cards in the portfolio, no matter NVIDIA or ATI, won't hurt much. The first ATI card from Albatron is a Radeon HD 4890 named Radeon HD 4890-1G. This model will be all-stock, clocked at 850 MHz for the GPU, with 256-bit memory interface and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 3900 MHz. The card should hit the market any time soon with a suggested retail price under $250. Later Albatron plans to release more products from the Radeon HD 4000 series.
