Biscotti TV Phone Review @MissingRemote

Video phones have been a staple of science fiction for decades. Most of us have come to understand that video phones will never become the norm, simply because there are far too many circumstances in which we answer the phone but would never want anyone to actually see what we look like at the moment, or where we are. That being said, the video phone has its place, and what better place than the living room. There are few better uses in the home for a video phone or teleconference system than for communicating with far-flung friends and family and the living room provides a space where the entire family can congregate and interact with the biggest screen in the house. At $199, the Biscotti TV Phone strives to be an inexpensive way of integrating video teleconferencing into the home theater. Every call on the Biscotti TV Phone is free, but is every call worth making?

Airlive N.Plug One Touch Wireless Repeater Review @ NikKTech

Although I’ve always preferred wired connections over wireless ones (mainly because of security issues) i can't deny that i have used Wi-Fi wireless points numerous times while on the go with my smartphone mostly. However regardless of how much practical wireless networks are they do have certain drawbacks and so aside the already mentioned security ones which can prove quite bad for people working with sensitive data signal range and quality are also two issues that can't really be ignored. Many manufacturers have tried to partially correct that issue by adding more antennas onto their wireless modem/routers and there have also been quite a few improvements in wireless standards during the past decade (from 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, to the latest 802.11n) but unfortunately signal range is still an important issue. Repeaters (also known as extenders) like the N.Plug One Touch Wireless Repeater by Airlive which we have here with us today have been around for many years and aim to boost the signal strength (range) of any Wi-Fi enabled modem/router without much effort.

25 Exciting Stats on Green Job Growth

25 Exciting Stats on Green Job Growth

Although many past Earth Days have come and gone with little in the way of good news regarding the environment, there is much to celebrate on April 22, 2012. Backed by one of the more environmentally-friendly presidents in recent memory, the United States has seen huge funding for alternative energy sources, a drive for better fuel economy, and a massive movement by colleges and other groups to live cleaner, greener, and more efficiently. So this Earth Day, think of these 25 exciting statistics about the growth of jobs for work that benefits the environment, and be happy. The future is bright.
  1. Hydropower is estimated to have the potential of adding 1.4 million jobs by 2025

Every state has the potential to create hydropower projects, from ocean water, streams, or pumped storage water, meaning plants all over the country could be created and staffed with workers.
  2. The government has created a $2 million green job competition for veterans

In March 2010, the government announced it would allocate $2 million toward grants for training military veterans in industries like bio-fuels, renewable electric power, energy-efficient construction, and more.
  3. The green construction industry will add 2.3 million workers to its labor force

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, green construction employed more than 1 million people from 2000 to 2008. This number is expected to rise to 3.3 million by 2013, about a 230% increase. Nearly half of American solar power firms plan to hire more workers: In August 2011, almost half of 2,100 solar power companies surveyed said they plan to add an expected 24,000 jobs by August 2012.
  4. The solar industry job growth rate is 6.8%

Compared to the fossil fuel industry’s negative growth rate of 2%, the nearly 7% growth in solar power jobs, including manufacturing and installation, is very promising.
  5. Tennessee will see the creation of 10,000 new green jobs by 2014

A handful of companies like Volkswagen and Nissan Leaf and Storage Battery Manufacturing will help the state continue to see an 8% growth rate annually, with jobs like energy brokers and solar installation managers becoming available.
  6. Ohio could see 23,000 new auto industry jobs in the next 10 years

A recent report by non-profit research group Ceres found that because of new federal regulations for fuel efficiency, hiring will increase by automakers and companies that make fuel-efficient tech.
  7. The geothermal industry has added 7,000 jobs and counting since 2008

Executive Director of the Geothermal Energy Association Karl Gawell estimated in 2011 that new geothermal construction projects, which have no fuel costs and produce very little CO2, will add another 3,000 jobs in California, Nevada, and elsewhere.
  8. The bio-fuel sector could produce 807,000 jobs by 2022

The Biotechnology Industry Organization said in late 2011 that the bio-fuel industry could produce hundreds of thousands of jobs while lowering U.S. oil imports by $70 billion.
  9. Knoxville, Tennessee’s green jobs grew by 14.6% annually from 2003 to 2010

In 2009 alone, Knoxville added more than 16,000 green jobs, helping lower the unemployment rate to 7.7% for the city, a full two points lower than the rest of the state.
  10. The green industry in the U.S. now employs 3.1 million workers

Green jobs now outnumber jobs in the fossil fuels industry (although some have taken issue with the definition of “green job” used in the calculation).
  11. In Little Rock, Arkansas 11,933 green jobs were created in 2010

Being home to clean-tech companies like LM Wind Power and CLEAResult Consulting helped Arkansas’ capital become one of the fastest-growing cities in America for green jobs.
  12. President Obama’s Recovery Act of 2009 invested $90 billion in clean energy

This money has already helped sponsor 40 clean-tech projects that will eventually employ upwards of 60,000 people.
  13. With more than 28,000, Albany has the highest concentration of green jobs in the country

One out of every 15 workers in and around Albany has a clean job, or 6.7%, thanks in large part to the business of GE, which houses many of its clean-tech operations in Schenectady.
  14. The U.S. is only tapping 20% of its hydropower capacity

There is much, much more room for job growth in hydropower because out of the 500 gigawatt capacity, the U.S. is only making use of 100 gigawatts.
  15. The Dept. of Energy’s Loan Guarantee Program will help create 10 times the number of the failed Keystone Pipeline

And what’s even more exciting is that the DOE program will cost taxpayers $2 billion less than originally expected.

Palit JetStream GeForce GTX 680 4GB Video Card Review

2GB of GDDR5 always seemed like a weird amount of memory to have on the latest NVIDIA video card, the GTX 680. It's not that 2GB isn't a lot, it's just that we're at the point where we feel when spending in excess of $500, we'd have a video card that carried a minimum of 3GB.

The second we knew the card came in 2GB flavor, though, we knew that it wouldn't take long for someone to come out and offer us a variant with 4GB. Just like they were the first to offer us a custom designed version, today they're the first to offer us a 4GB version. Of course we're talking about Palit.

The other week we looked at the Palit Jetstream GTX 680 2GB in not only single card form, but also in SLI. Impressed with what was on offer from the card we were excited to see what doubling the memory to 4GB would do.

As usual before we get into the performance side of things there's a few things that we need to do with the first of course being check out the package that Palit have put together. Once we've done that we'll take a closer look at the card itself before moving into the specification side of things. Finally before we get in to the benchmark side of things we'll see what's going on with our testbed today and the cards we'll be using in our graphs.

New 2012 AppleTV Review @MissingRemote

In our first look at the new 2012 Apple TV it was clear that the form factor and basic function was consistent with many of the other over the top (OTT) media streamers on the market, but it was the visual appealing user interface (UI) that really shines compared to similar devices which became apparent in the video walkthrough. What was not clear, given the brief time with the Apple TV, was how it performs after the first-impression sheen has worn off or how the recently upgraded 1080p iTunes content stacks up against established OTT services like Netflix and VUDU, or the current top-end option, Blu-ray. Having spent the focused energy to really get to know the device it is time to come back with answers to those questions, as well as provide a fuller picture of what is provided by Apple’s OTT streamer refresh.

Noctua NH-L12 Low-Profile CPU Cooler Review @ NikKTech

Strangely enough although the latest LGA2011 Sandy Bridge CPUs are the hottest thing currently, at least in terms of processing power there still aren't that many new cooling solutions in the market that support them and since i decided on starting over with a brand new LGA2011 based CPU Cooler database (the old LGA1366 one was way too long) this has proven to be quite the problem. Thankfully aside the huge NH-D14 SE2011 CPU Cooler Noctua has also launched another LGA2011 compatible CPU Cooler the latest low-profile NH-L12 which although targeted towards HTPC users and not hardcore overclockers and enthusiasts still it carries quite a punch for its size as you will see later on.

Another World 15th Anniversary Edition PC Review

When it first hit our screens way back in 1991 Another World shifted a staggering 1 million copies, although it would be near impossible to work out how many it’s sold since. Its cult status and solid game play have kept the fires burning for this title for a little over two decades now, with ports and releases across a number of platforms from the Amiga, Snes, Mega Drive and all the way up to iOS and Android, although the version I’ll be paying attention to in this review is the 20th Anniversary HD edition for Windows.

I first got my hands on this game for the Sega Mega drive when I was 8 years old, the game was hard as anything and I could barely get past the first level, even when I did manage to get to level two I would only get stuck, but the game had a big impact on me, for some reason I would always go back and keep trying, wouldn’t get anywhere, but I just enjoyed the challenge and the peculiar game play.

It wasn’t until about 2005 that I managed to pick up a copy of the game again and made it all the way to the fourth level, obviously this wasn’t going to be a game I could complete in a hurry, now don’t get me wrong, this game isn’t big, far from it, once you know how to complete it, memorise what you’re supposed to do and when, then you could complete it in around an hour, the fun and hard part though is working out that whole “how” part.

From the start of the game, you take the roll of Lester Knight Chaykin, a young physicist who is working in his lab during a thunderstorm, tinkering away with his particle accelerator, at least that is until lightning strikes the building, screws with his equipment and tears a hole in time and space, sending you quite literally to Another World, now if that isn’t a simple yet effective setup for a sci-fi story, nothing is.

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro C1 Dual Tower CPU Cooler Review

Be Quiet! are making a large push in the cooling market by carrying over the experience that they have gained in other areas to unlock a pathway to success. We recently took a look at their premier fan series, the Silent Wings 2/Dark Wings series and were thoroughly impressed by them, especially the acoustic results. Can the pinnacle of their CPU cooler line-up, the Dark Rock Pro C1, live up to the high expectations set by their impressive fans?
Be Quiet! employ a dual tower heatsink with a pair of 120mm fans. 7 6mm copper heatpipes combine with a nickel-plated base to extract the heat produced by a CPU. Dark nickel plating is used for both the heatpipes and base giving them an enthusiast-black appearance. Heat-conduction voids are filled by the utilisation of Shin-Etsu’s high quality X-23-7762 thermal paste. A pair of Be Quiet!’s 120mm Silent Wings PWM fans which operate at 1,700 RPM provide airflow for the heat to be dissipated from the 44 aluminium fins in each tower. One of the more unique additions is the full-aluminium cover which connects both towers together providing them with extra stability. This removable cover also doubles up as an appearance-enhancing feature to an alreay attractive CPU cooler.
The £54.19/€67,90 Dark Rock Pro C1 is backed by a 3 year manufacturer warranty. Be Quiet! offer support for all modern Intel and AMD sockets including LGA 2011 via a separately available bracket. Can Be Quiet!’s 1550g Dark Rock Pro C1 bring home the CPU cooling crown?

10 Pioneers of the Background Check Industry

Though its recent popularity is greater than ever before, the background check industry has roots that extend farther back than one might think. Many developments came together to create the industry as we know it today. Here are ten of the pioneering people and organizations in background screening.
  1. Henry Fielding – The creator of the forerunner to the modern police records system, Henry Fielding’s contributions to law enforcement and modern private investigation is undeniable. His Bow Street Runners, the first professional police force, were responsible for several advancements in criminal justice.
  2. J. Edgar Hoover – His creation of the first fingerprint database and obsession with data collection left an indelible mark on the methods investigators use to collect information.
  3. Eugene Francois Vidocq – One of the most important and controversial aspects of a full background check is the ability to access sensitive consumer report information; this is due in part to the work of French convict-turned-lawman Eugene Francois Vidocq who created the world’s first credit reporting agency.
  4. Allan Pinkerton – America’s first private investigator, the legendary Scottish-born Allan Pinkerton was responsible for many advancement in law enforcement and investigative techniques in both the public and private sectors.
  5. Jim and Sarah Brady – After being injured in the assassination attempt on President Reagan, Jim Brady suffered permanent paralysis and some brain damage. In response to this, he and his wife Sarah became crusaders for more stringent gun control laws, which spawned the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. This law requires that all people attempting to purchase a firearm must first submit to a background check.

CM Storm Sirus 5.1 USB Gaming Headset Review

Cooler Master has been in the game for a long time, making some of the most impressive gear for your PC out there. I personally recall my first experience with CM was a lovely all aluminum case with a tachometer on the front for system voltage, which at the time was so cool and made the system really stand out.

Turn the clock forward six or seven years and CM have branched out into the world of PC audio with their subsidiary brand CM Storm. And today we are looking at the Sirus 5.1 gaming headset to start out with. And if it's nearly as good as our past experience with CM, look out.

7 Blogs for People That Love to Complain About Politics

There’s an old rule of social etiquette that cautions, “Never discuss religion or politics”, and for good reason. The idea was to steer clear of any subject as polarizing and incendiary as these. Of course, that bit of advice is from a quainter time before online flame wars, when polite conversation was the norm. Ah, the good old days. But if you like your political discourse with a bit of an edge, we’ve got some great news. The web is full of blogs made just for you. Here are seven of them:
  1. Alex Jones’ InfoWars.com Alex Jones is out there. He loves his conspiracies, as do the minions who frequent both his website and radio show. All you really need to know about this blog is right here, a conversation between Jones and that bastion of rational thought, Charlie Sheen, about their views on 9/11.
  2. FreeRepublic.com – For those of you who like your politics served up just right – like way right – this may the right exit for you. There’s plenty of good old-fashioned grassroots conservative spleen-spilling going on, with lots of associated links.
  3. TheBlaze.comThis sites purports: “Our goal is to post, report and analyze stories of interest on a wide range of topics from politics and culture to faith and family.” So pretty much same as above, except with a zesty religion tang tossed into your salad.
  4. RightWingWatch.orgFormally, People For the American Way’s Right Wing Watch. Their mission: “… dedicated to monitoring and reporting on the activities of right-wing political organizations, in order to expose the agenda of the extreme Right”.

10 Colleges That Are Taking on Personal Finance

As the economy struggles to recover from the downturn that has marked the past few years, many are focusing increased amounts of attention on their personal finances, hoping to spend less, save more, and plan for the future. The trouble is, the majority of young people have no idea where to start. A 2011 survey by Charles Schwab found that only 52% of high school students have savings accounts, even though 75% of them claim to be knowledgeable about money management. Somewhere along the line, students are missing out on key pieces of financial education and many schools are starting to take note.
Several states now require personal finance courses at the high school level, but colleges are getting in on the game as well, with some even making personal finance courses a requirement for graduation. Whatever the rules, it’s clear that young people need a bit of help when it comes to learning how to manage money, and these colleges are making sure that their students will be ahead of the game. Mark this year’s Financial Literacy Month by learning about just a few of the colleges and universities that are stressing financial education.
  1. Penn State Erie

In a partnership with National Educators Council, Penn State Erie is taking part in the Financial EduNation Campaign. Starting in April 2012, the college will be providing free personal finance programs to students, parents, educators, and other organizations throughout the state as their part of promoting the campaign. Aimed at teens and young adults, the programs are completed online through a program that features celebrities, business leaders, and sports stars. So far, the school has reached out to more than 25,000 students in middle school through college, but they hope to expand the program during the coming month.
  2. Indiana University Kelley School of Business

Students at this business school can get a crash-course in financial education in a sophomore course taught by Professor Brian Jbara. Jbara has reported an increased interest in his course in recent years, as students worried about a poor job market, student loan debt, and a generally poor economy look to build real-world skills before graduation. Jbara believes that helping students to learn more about their financial lives is critical to their success in their first jobs and beyond. His course has grown from just 25 students to 225 over the past 10 years he has been teaching it, a testament to the growing popularity of personal finance education on college campuses.
  3. NYU

At NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, there are a number of personal finance courses students can take. While the courses may have been largely ignored in past years, that isn’t the case anymore, as students flock to the office to register for personal finance courses. In fact, the courses were so popular and had so much interest from students outside of professional fields that the school actually added several other sections to their line-up. In addition, the school has been approached by family members of students who want to learn more about how to address their own financial situations, and the school may branch out further in coming years to meet the needs of a community that increasingly wants to build better personal finance skills.
  4. Washington University, St. Louis

Professor Michael Gordinier has taught a personal finance course at Wash U since 2003, open to any student at the school in their junior or senior year of study. Over the past few years, the course has grown in popularity and has become one of the better-attended and most-requested classes on campus, boasting a class size of almost 200 students, up from just 80 a decade ago. The course is often more full than that, however, as many business students often audit the course (they cannot take it for credit) just to get information. At the end of the semester, many students thank Gordinier for helping them save more or get out of debt, a big payoff for a semester of work. Gordinier thinks all schools should offer similar programs, which are currently pretty uncommon, to students so that they can learn practical skills in money management.
  5. Champlain College

At Champlain College, students don’t get a choice when it comes to taking courses in finance; they’re required. Undergrads at Champlain must attend two sessions on financial literacy during their time at the school, a change that was made because administrators felt too many students were graduating without basic financial skills. The courses cover topics like credit scores, saving, budgeting, retirement, and credit strategies, among others. Students learn fundamentals that will help them get jobs, buy homes, and manage debt. In addition to the required courses, students at Champlain can continue their financial education through courses in student loans and employment benefits. The school hopes to host a financial literacy conference in the coming years.

10 Classic Ways News Anchors have Signed off the Air

News celebrities always want to make their mark.  They want to have their own way of doing things so that people will remember them over the next guy on another channel.  Morning shows now have their weather guys who each have their own way of going to local weather.  Al Roker will say, “Here’s what going on in your neck of the woods.”  Sam Donaldson will say, “That’s the weather around the nation.  Here’s what you can expect this morning.”  News anchors have been doing it for many years as well.  See if you remember these famous sign offs.
  1. Good Day! This famous sign off was made by Paul Harvey.  He was a famous Midwesterner that was on the radio for 75 years.  He signed a 10 year, $100 million contract with ABC news in 2000.  He didn’t quite finish out his contract as he died Feb. 28, 2009 at the age of 90.  He never stopped broadcasting.  He wrote a book about his “Rest of the Story” tag line and it sold millions and the book hit its 18th printing in only four years.
  2. And so it goes: Linda Ellerbee made this sign off so famous that she actually did a guest appearance on the television show Murphy Brown.  She was competing with Murphy Brown to see if Murphy Brown could come up with a sign off better than Linda’s.  Linda is one of the few women that really had a famous sign off.  This category seems to be dominated by men.
  3. And that’s the way it is … followed by the date was the way that Walter Cronkite signed off on the CBS news.  Cronkite is credited with creating the news anchor job.  He covered big stories like, the Kennedy assassination, the Watergate scandal, and the Apollo 11 moon landing.  Cronkite passed away July 18, 2009 at the age of 92.
  4. That’s the nightly news for this Wednesday night: This is how Tom Brokaw ended the nightly news on NBC.  Brokaw was on NBC for 22 years and retired in 2004.  He now does special reports for NBC and is a well-respected author of several books and is the only news personality to host Meet the Press, The Today Show and NBC Nightly News.  These are NBC’s three top news programs.
  5. and that’s part of our world tonight: Dan Rather ended his broadcasts with this famous sign off for 24 years on CBS.  Rather followed Cronkite at CBS and filled his rather big shoes very well.  Rather was forced to quit in 2005 over a story he did on then president George Bush.

Epic Gear Meduza HDST Gaming Mouse & Hybrid Mousepad Review

Epic Gear are a relatively unheard of gaming peripherals company, partly because they are actually a branch of Golden Emperor International Limited (GEIL) who’s RAM most people have heard of. GEIL have also ventured into the PSU market with Thortech. Gaming peripherals are the latest venture that GEIL are experimenting with. So far they only have a few products on the market, but this could all change depending the successfulness of the current products. Having the right mouse is essential for every gamer. It can make all the difference, especially when playing competitively. Although what good is a decent gaming mouse if the surface that it is being used on is rubbish? That would be like having a ferrari but only having dirt tracks to drive it on. Having the best mouse pad is yet another variable that must be considered and can often be just as difficult as selecting the right mouse. Well it looks like GEIL have saved everyone that problem by releasing their first gaming mouse and matched mouse pad.
The Meduza gaming mouse is the first mouse that we have seen that features both an optical and laser sensor. By using Epic Gear’s Hybrid Dual Sensor Technology (HDST), it is possible to use both sensors, combining the sensitivity of the laser, and the stability of optical. Gigabyte B75M-D3H Motherboard Sandy Bridge Review

Gigabyte are a brand that we are all familiar with, and of course they aim to stay at the forefront of the market, even through tough times, and rightly so. They have a very large following all across the world and are known to have some of the best quality boards on the market, while also being “leaders in innovation” as they so rightly put it.
With the addition of the Intel Z77 platform being released today, we also see some lesser known technologies being released with various different chipsets. This month will lead you to believe that Z77 and Ivy Bridge are the only things being released, but you would be wrong, as we make a small pathway for B75.
With B75 now upon us, we can let the lid off of a board that Gigabyte are releasing; the B75M-D3H. A board that takes advantage of key Gigabyte features, as well as the likes of Intel Small Business Advantage, which opens up a large area for business focussed features including USB Blocker and data backup technologies.
We have already published a preview on this board, so it makes no sense going over old ground, so instead we will talk about anything that we had to miss due to NDA constraints and then will jump straight in to show you how Sandy Bridge performs, but please beware that this board is aimed at a business market, and not your general consumer market if that’s what you are expecting, as you won’t find any of that overclocking malarky here I’m afraid. If that’s your scene, then we have loads of Z77 goodness waiting for you in our motherboards section here.
For now however, we will be getting this board straight onto our test bench, taking a look at the BIOS that comes included and then getting straight into seeing how it works with an old favourite of ours; the Intel i7 2700k, but first let’s take a quick look at what B75 has to offer.

Is There Truly a Way to Delete a Twitter Account?

Depending on your reasons for considering the deletion of your Twitter account, there may be less drastic options available. If you’re simply ready for a new username, changing the handle on your existing account or the connected email address is quite simple. For those with privacy concerns, a Twitter account can very easily be locked, meaning that only followers approved by the account holder can view that user’s tweets. These options can save users who simply need a change a fair amount of headache related to the permanent removal of a social networking trail.
However, if you’re determined to remove your Twitter footprint permanently, there are ways to go about it. Unlike Facebook, Twitter doesn’t hide the link to delete a profile or resort to passive-aggressive tactics to entice you to stay. Twitter users in the process of deleting their account will simply be presented with a playful request for the reason behind their decision, “Are you sure you don’t want to reconsider? Was it something we said? Tell us.” Deleting your account starts with the “Deactivate My Account” option in the account settings menu. This permanent deactivation will result in the eventual removal of your data, though it may take up to four weeks after the deactivation period for all of the information to be completely purged.
