AMD Announces the A10-7890K APU and the Wraith CPU Cooler
AMD Announces the A10-7890K APU and the Wraith CPU Cooler
AMD recently unveiled that it is utilizing the new AM4 socket as a unified platform for its upcoming products. The company has also just revealed the A10-7890K APU, which offers a small speed increase over the current flagship APU from AMD, the A10-7870K. The A10-7890K features a max turbo frequency of 4.3GHz and offers four CPU cores and eight GPU cores, just like the other top of the line A10 APUs offered by the company. AMD also announced the new Wraith cooler, which is considerably better than the current CPU cooler that ships with AMD products. The Wraith Cooler features a back-lit AMD logo, a constant velocity fan, and a similar footprint of its predecessor. AMD has noted that its Wraith Cooler, which will ship with all retail APUs and CPUs going forward, features one-tenth of the noise, 24 percent more cooling fin surface area, and 34 percent more air flow than its predecessor.

AMD Moving to Unified Socket with Zen
A lot of people are already looking forward to the release of the Zen architecture by AMD later this year. It is expected to come with a significant performance improvement over current AMD processors and include support new technologies like DDR4. Now it has been confirmed that it will be on a unified socket named AM4.
Currently AMD employs three sockets and each covers a different platform class. The AM3+ socket is the one used by the company's high performance CPUs, with FM2+ for the APUs, and finally the AM1 socket is for entry level platforms. Going to a single socket will tremendously simplify things for many people as all Zen-supporting motherboards will be able to accept any Zen-based processor. This does also mean that anyone wanting to upgrade to Zen, when it launches, will also have to upgrade their motherboard, so you will have to save up a bit more to make the move.

Razer Debuts the Blade Stealth Ultrabook and Core External GPU Enclosure
Razer Debuts the Blade Stealth Ultrabook and Core External GPU Enclosure
Razer isn't typically a name you think of when you're looking for a new Ultrabook, but that just might change. At CES, Razer announced the Blade Stealth Ultrabook and the Core external GPU enclosure. The Razer Blade Stealth comes in at just 0.52" thick and weighing a mere 2.75 pounds, bringing it right into the realm of Ultrabooks. It's powered by an Intel Core i7-6500U processor, with a 12.5" LED touchscreen featuring either a 2560x1440 or 3840x2160 resolution panel. It comes with 8GB of LPDDR3-1866 RAM, a Chroma keyboard with individually backlit keys, and 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. Two USB 3.0 ports, a single USB 3.1 Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, HDMI 1.4b, and a combined 3.5mm audio port round out the connections on the Blade Stealth. The base model has the smaller resolution and a 128GB PCIe M.2 SSD, but you can bump up the storage to 256GB. If you want to increase the resolution, you can get either a 256 or 512GB SSD. Now, the included graphics on the Razer Blade Stealth are just through the Intel HD 520 on the CPU, but that's where the Core comes in.
The Razer Core is an external GPU enclosure that can fit nearly any video card from NVIDIA and AMD, provided it doesn't exceed 5.98" x 1.73" x 12.2". Sadly only a single card is supported. A 500W PSU is included inside the Core that can power a video card with up to a 375W TDP, so really, most any video card you can think of can run inside the Core. The Blade Stealth connects to the Core via a Thunderbolt 3 cable, giving you access to an additional four USB 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet. An external display can also be powered by the Core, so you can game on your monitor of choice or stick with the Blade Stealth.
The Razer Blade Stealth's base model starts at $999, with the 512GB SSD and 3840x2160 resolution screen jumping things up to $1599. Razer lists the Blade Stealth as shipping at the end of January, although right now the price and launch of the Core is still unknown other than it arrives sometime in the first half of this year. Also unknown is whether or not Razer will update its Blade and Blade Pro laptops, so keep it tuned for any word on those.

be quiet! Launches the Pure Power 9 Power Supply Series
Be quiet! is a name that's been gaining ground in the U.S. over the years, and with CES this week it saw the perfect opportunity to launch a new power supply series. The be quiet! Pure Power 9 builds on the success of the Pure Power 8 and improves it in a number of key areas. It's available in both a fixed cable and modular style, so you can pick whichever one will best suit your build. It has a higher performance level than its predecessor, but a lower operating volume thanks to a new 120mm fan so you can hardly hear it running. Reliability is improved so it's now 80 PLUS Silver certified. The cables for both the fixed and modular versions are plentiful, with more SATA connectors, a longer P8 and 24-pin to better provide power to your system without worrying if the cables will reach, an all-black connector and wire design, and flat peripheral and PCIe cables for a slimmer look.
The be quiet! Pure Power 9's modular version will arrive in March, with 400, 500, 600, and 700W models available. The fixed cable version arrives in June, with the same wattage models available. Each PSU comes with a three-year warranty. Be quiet! also announced a red version of its SB600 and 800 cases will be available soon, with the same price as the windowed and non-windowed of the current colors. You can also see some shots of the Shadow Rock Slim, Shadow Rock 2, Pure Rock, Shadow Rock LP, Dark Rock TF, and the massive Dark Rock Pro 3 CPU coolers below.

New NVIDIA GeForce Bundle Pairs GTX 900 Cards with Rise of the Tomb Raider
New NVIDIA GeForce Bundle Pairs GTX 900 Cards with Rise of the Tomb Raider
So much CES news on new hardware, sometimes it's nice to see something about software. Well, in this case it's more like software bundled with hardware, as NVIDIA has announced a new GeForce Gaming bundle. When gamers purchase an eligble GeForce GTX 900 video card or laptop, they'll receive a free copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the upcoming (for those of us without an Xbox One) sequel from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics. Starting today, anyone who purchases a GTX 970 or higher video card, or a laptop with a GTX 970M, 980M, or 980 GPU will receive a free copy of the game. Rise of the Tomb Raider is set one year after the events of the rebooted Tomb Raider, with Lara on the trail of her late father to the lost city of Kitezh. Plenty of danger and peril exists along the way, with Lara having to use all her skill, puzzle solving expertise, and exploration knowledge to get to the bottom of the adventure.
The PC release for Rise of the Tomb Raider occurs on January 28, so this gives you plenty of time to decide on that new upgrade or laptop. The promotion runs until February 16, so don't delay too long!

Gigabyte Launching Three New Motherboards and Updating Its Mini-PC Line
Gigabyte Launching Three New Motherboards and Updating Its Mini-PC Line
Today GIGBYTE has launched and is showing off three new motherboards with the LGA1151 socket, the GA-X150-PLUS WS, GA-X150M-PLUS WS, and GA-X170-Extreme ECC. The X150-PLUS WS is an ATX board with several features meant to provide the best speed and reliability, including DDR4 support, two x16 PCIe slots that have their lanes directly connected to the CPU, and an onboard PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 connector with up to 32 Gb/s transfer speeds. If you are still looking for a LGA1151 motherboard to drop an Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processor into but want something cheaper and with fewer extreme features, the X150M-PLUS WS, a micro-ATX board, may be the thing for you. It still has the DDR4 support and its x16 PCIe slot still has its lanes coming directly off of the CPU for the greatest possible bandwidth. Finally the X170-Extreme ECC board supports ECC Memory and sports more USB 3.0 and SATA3 ports, so you can have both stability and performance.
GIGABYTE is also updating its GIGABYTE BRIX barebone mini-PC to come with Intel's 6th Gen. Core processors. With it you can hold the power of a Core i3 up to a Core i7 processor in the palm of your hand. Different configurations are available, including some with support for 2.5 in drives, for those who need additional storage. They also have USB 3.0 ports and can power three displays with their support for HDMI and DisplayPort. These new BRIX are also going to be the first to support Intel's Thunderbolt 3 standard over USB Type-C, which have single-wire bandwidth of up to 40 Gb/s.

Thermaltake Unveils Core W100 and WP100 Cases
Thermaltake Unveils Core W100 and WP100 Cases
Hot off the heels of the earlier announced Core X71 and Core X31 cases come the Core W100 and WP100 from Thermaltake. These two cases feature a fully dismantable modular design; everything you see in the case can be taken apart and reassembled however you wish for a custom build all your own. It's also a pretty good learning experience in just how your new case goes together. The Core W100 is something Thermaltake calls a super tower case, as it's a massive 26.7" x 12.2" x 26.7" behemoth. Inside it can fit more hard drives than most consumers know what to do with, as up to 10 are possible. Water cooling support is pretty high with the W100, as a 280mm radiator can be installed in the bottom, a 120 or 140mm rad in the rear, up to a 420mm rad in the front, and up to a massive 600mm rad at the top. For those on air, it's quite extensive, too, as three 120/140mm fans can fit up front, four in the top, one each in the rear, three in the bottom, and 12 on the left and right sides. If those aren't big enough, up to three 200mm fans fit in the top and six each on either side.
The W100 can stack with the P100 pedastal case to morph into the WP100, which lets you house more water cooling gear (the sides can hold anything from a 120mm rad to a 560mm rad), pure storage heaven that bumps the 10 HDD/SSD count to 20, or even dual systems. Internal clearance is quite high in the case, as 200mm is possible for the CPU cooler height, 470mm long video cards can fit inside with the HDD rack (635mm without), and a PSU up to 180mm with three bottom fans or 220mm with two bottom fans. Four USB 3.0 ports and audio in/out adorn the front I/O panel, as do three external 5.25" bays. Motherboard support ranges from XL-ATX all the way down to Mini-ITX, with even the SSI MEB server motherboards a possibility. Magnetic dust filters adorn the sides and top to help keep particles out and for easy cleaning.
Thermaltake bills the W100 and WP100 cases as the ultimate DIY builds (plus server and workstation), and it's pretty easy to see why. Both cases arrive at the end of February, with the W100 setting you back $329.99 and the WP100 $439.99.

AMD Unveils A10-7890K Desktop APU
AMD made an update to its desktop APU lineup, with the addition of the A10-7890K. This socket FM2+ chip, based on the "Kaveri" Refresh silicon, replaces the A10-7870K as the fastest APU you can buy. The chip's maximum (Turbo Core) frequency is upped to 4.30 GHz, compared to the 4.20 GHz on the A10-7870K. The nominal clock speed remains unchanged, it's rumored to be 4.00 GHz, but it wouldn't surprise us if AMD kept it at 3.90 GHz. AMD could bundle its recently demoed Wraith air-cooler with this chip, which promises significantly lower noise levels than the older reference cooler. In addition to the A10-7890K, AMD announced that it is working with its motherboard partners to launch a fresh wave of socket FM2+ and AM3+ boards that feature modern connectivity, such as USB 3.1 type-C and type-A, and M.2 PCIe slots.

Intel Could Price 10-core "Broadwell-E" Core i7 Differently
Intel's upcoming Core i7 "Broadwell-E" HEDT processors in the LGA2011v3 package will be sold in not three, but four models, detailed in our older article. The lineup consists of two six-core parts, and one each of eight-core and ten-core. The biggest question at the time was pricing - with Intel traditionally pricing the slowest HEDT part around the $400-mark, the middle variant around $600, and the top-dog at $1000, how the company could squeeze in a fourth variant. It turns out that the company wants you to pay top-dollar for ten cores in your machine.

Intel could retain its traditional HEDT pricing scheme for all but the 10-core part. The "entry-level" (if you can call it that) Core i7-6800K could be priced around the $400-mark. The Core i7-6850K, could retail for $600. It's likely that clock-speed isn't the only thing setting the two six-core models, it wouldn't surprise us if Intel ships the i7-6800K with a "limited" PCIe root-complex, much like the i7-5820K. The eight-core i7-6900K could be priced at $999, at what used to be Intel's top client CPU price-point. It turns out that the 10-core i7-6950X could be priced at no less than $1,500. This isn't the first time Intel priced its top HEDT chip above $999. The dual-socket capable Core 2 Extreme QX9775, which sold exclusively with Intel's first-generation "Skull Trail" motherboard, retailed at $1,300. Intel plans to launch its Core i7 "Broadwell-E" lineup in the second quarter of 2016.

Mushkin Shows Off a 500-Dollar 4 TB SSD
How to make headlines with a rather mainstream SSD controller like the Silicon Motion SM2246EN? Ask Mushkin - after unveiling a 2 TB variant of the Reactor SSD, which maxes out the NAND flash capacity limit for the SM2246EN controller, the company also showed off a prototype of its 4 TB variant, which overcomes the capacity limitation by doing a good old-fashioned multi-controller SSD subunit RAID, which is host-transparent. Your machine reads the drive as 4 TB, while internally, it's a JBOD of two 2 TB Reactor subunits.

The drive uses 3D MLC NAND flash to keep densities high. It features a standard SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and ships in a standard 7 mm-thick, 2.5-inch form-factor. The best part? Mushkin plans to sell the drive at $500, or $0.25/GB, making it an exciting game folder drive option. In addition to the Reactor duo, Mushkin unveiled a 1920 GB variant of the Striker, a performance-oriented drive based on the Phison PS3110-S10 controller, with faster MLC NAND flash chips. This drive could be pricier.
