Galaxy offers gamers GTS 450 Hall of Fame edition video card
Galaxy is one of the card partners that offers NVIDIA video cards. Not too long ago when the GTS 450 debuted, Galaxy was one of the companies with cards on launch day. Those GTS 450 cards were decent enough considering the price the cards sold for. There were probably bunches of gamers out there that liked the price of the card and wished that the clock speeds were a bit higher. For those people Galaxy has unveiled the new GTS 450 Hall of Fame edition.

The HoF edition of the video card shares the common features of all the GTS 450's with support for things like DirectX and CUDA. The big difference in this HoF and the standard GTS 450 card is the clock speeds. Galaxy overclocks the HoF version at the factory with a graphics clock of 1000MHz, a processor clock of 2000MHz, and a memory clock of 4100MHz. The card also has a special 3+1 phase power supply for improved performance.
Another special feature of the HoF edition card is that it has a unique cooling system with dual fans and four heat pipes to draw the extra heat from the card. “Our new GTS 450 Hall of Fame edition demolishes the competition with a core clock of 1000Mhz.” said Shane Vance, US Sales, Galaxy. “Our custom cooler, Samsung 0.4ns GDDR5 memory and Galaxy designed board allow us to achieve these insane speeds."

China now has the world's fastest supercomputer - Operation Skynet has begun
Wow, just wow. China has just surpassed the US and the rest of the world by revealing the world's fastest supercomputer.

Dubbed the Tianhe-1A, it is located at the National Supercomputer Center (where else would you build a Supercomputer but the National Supercomputer Center!!) in Tianjin. The Tianhe-1A scored 2.507 petaflops as measured by the LINPACK benchmark.
The Tianhe-1A now beats the Cray's 2.3 petaflops.
Tianhe-1A was able to achieve it's record by using 7, 168 NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU's and 14, 336 Intel Xeon CPU's consuming a very nice 4.04 megawatts.
I *was* going to crack a Crysis joke here, but I think it's been done to death ;)

Apple working on built in SIM cards for iPhone
Apple is said to be tinkering with a built in SIM card that will become an integrated part of iPhones instead of a swappable card. This would allow iPhone owners to purchase their iPhones directly from Apple and choose their own GSM network without having to change SIM cards.

While this wouldnÂ’t be the largest news in the U.S. due to the current AT&T exclusivity, places like Europe with multiple GSM networks and none of the silly single carrier nonsense may have the carriers cut out of the iPhone purchasing process with this technology. Cutting out the middleman on iPhone sales would be a sweet deal for Apple, if not the carriers that support them.

Google adds Place Search to streamline local information searches
Discovering new places and local spots has gotten a lot easier with GoogleÂ’s new Place Search. While lots of searches can give you millions of useless links, Google is personalizing the search experience even more that gives you reviews, information, and mapped out locations of places that may tickle your fancy.

Places can be activated through the left side taskbar or is also automatically used if Google decides your search for “Boston Pizza Places” would make Place Search more useful than a normal googling. The goal is to reduce the amount of searches required to get local information.

Apple has also launched a Simplified Chinese version of the App Store and announced plans for 25 Apple Stores to open in China by the end of next year. It look like Steve Jobs took the backlash about “neglecting the Chinese market” to heart and is coming after every yuan he can get his hands on.

Multiple WebOS devices being manufactured by Foxconn
WebOS, looking to make a comeback after the acquisition by HP, may be doing that by teaming up with Foxconn and Compal Communications. These two companies are said to be currently manufacturing “multiple WebOS devices,” including the PalmPad.

Sources state that “Palm`s new smartphones manufactured by Foxconn and Compal Communications will all adopt the brand`s Linux-based mobile operating system, WebOS, which will more or less allow the two suppliers to gain manufacturing familiarity with Palm`s Pre Plus and Pixi Plus phones.” It looks like the Palm name won’t be disappearing anytime soon, regardless of their HP ownership.

Maylong M-150 Android tablet available for $100 at Walgreens
Cheap Android tablets seem to be hitting shelves in a lot of discount stores like K-Mart. Walgreens is adding their name to that list by offering up the $100 Maylong M-150 Android tablet.

Specs arenÂ’t really anything to scream about: a 7-inch 800 x 480 screen, 400MHz VIA VM8505+ processor, WiFi, and a microSD expansion slot. The Internet Explorer looking Internet icon and overall iPad look give it kind of a knockoff feel, but for a Benjamin you go in knowing youÂ’re not getting the latest and greatest tech. ItÂ’s still not a bad looking device for the price, so check it out next time youÂ’re picking up your prescriptions.

Google exec says Android acquisition its "best deal ever"
Well - even I didn't know this until now - Android was not a Google creation. Google bought the company back in 2005 (for an undisclosed amount - which is estimated to be around $50 million) - and as we all know, it has turned out very well for them.

Just how good, is the question - where Google's vice president or corporate development, David Lawee told attendees at the Stanford Accell Symposium this week that the acquisition of Android was Google's "best deal ever." He went into greater detail saying he did have initial skepticism about the deal and recalls saying "I hope this guy does saying" after seeing Andy Rubin around the building for two years.

Mozilla pushes Firefox 4 back to 2011
Today Mozilla have announced it will delay Firefox 4 until 2011. The decision is after several weeks of no progress on Firefox 4 Beta 7 - which had a date to ship in September but missed it as they hit several bugs in the release.

Director of Firefox, Mike Beltzner said "Completing this work [on Firefox 4] is taking longer than initial estimates indicated as we track down regressions and sources of instability."
Beltzner said Mozilla could not push Firefox 4 out in November - and December "is a bad time to release a product" he said. Development for Firefox 4 has not slowed down, even with the delayed launch - "The user interface changes are converging, the graphics and layout features are wrapping up, and recently the JavaScript engine was dramatically improved." he added.
Firefox 4 is now slated for a release candidate status sometime early 2011.

Apple goes crazy in ad spending in 2010 - even Don Draper is impressed
Apple's fiscal 2010 report is out (10-K form) - the document is filled with information and details on the state of Apple's business - one big flashing light is just how much Apple spend on advertising in 2010.

In previous years, Apple spent $467 million in 2007, $486 million in 2008, $501 million in 2009 and this year Apple have spent an astonishing $691 million on advertising alone - a $190 million increase from last year alone. Even more surprising, Apple is continuing their trend of lowering the percentage of revenues spent on advertising.
While $691 million is a lot on advertising - keep in mind Apple had total revenues of over $65 billion - this equates to around 1 percent of their revenue, spent on advertising. Last year, that percentage was 1.37 and in 2007 it was 5 percent.
Apple may be spending more on advertising, but they're making much more money, quicker - which means the overall amount they spent on advertising isn't really inflating as their revenue is making leaps and bounds over it.
To put it in perspective - Microsoft spent half of that on advertising, last year - and it's less than Dell spent last year too.
Have they hired Don Draper and the boys at Sterling Cooper? Love that show to bits.

Snakebyte Premium Remote for Wii has MotionPlus built-in
If you are a Wii gamer, you probably have a MotionPlus accessory that you use for some of your games. I think that we can all agree that having that MotionPlus accessory sticking off the end of your controller isn't the ideal way to get better control in your games. Nintendo is working on a new controller that has MotionPlus built-in. Sunflex has announced the Snakebyte controller claiming the title of first third-party controller to integrate MotionPlus.

The official name for the Wii Remote is the Snakebyte Premium Remote XL+ controller for Wii with Motion Plus. That is a seriously long name for a controller. The Snakebyte supports up to four players just as the normal Wii Remotes do. It also has an integrated speaker, memory settings, and vibration effects just as the factory controllers do.
The Snakebyte controller gets power from an internal rechargeable battery that charges from the USB port on the Wii or a computer. The controller also features an external sync button so you can synchronize to Wii consoles without having to remove the battery door. The controller is shipping now for $34.99. That price is only $5 cheaper than the official Nintendo controller with MotionPlus built-in, I'd rather spend the extra $5 and get the real deal personally.

HP Envy 17 3D notebook now shipping direct from HP
I think that 3D has been one of the most talked about (and perhaps over talked about) new technologies for the home theater and computer user this year. The thing that is so strange to me is that 3D on the computer is far from new. Gamers have had 3D drivers for years for gaming despite the huge influx of new 3D machines hitting the market this year. HP unveiled the cool Envy 17 3D notebook a while back and the machine is now shipping.

If you want to get your hands on the thin and powerful Envy 17 3D notebook prices start at $1599.99 and the machines are shipping right now directly from HP. The base configuration gets you a Core i7-720QM CPU, HD 5850 graphics, 6GB of RAM, 500GB of storage, and a 17.3-inch 1080p 3D display. The 3D machine also ships with HP's active shutter 3D glasses for enjoying those 3D effects.
HP offers a number of options for the machine that will run the starting price up considerably. HP's recommended configuration will cost you $1849.99. Shipping on the machines is free and there are some other nice savings being offered for accessories like 50% off a 6 or 9-cell battery for the notebook, and $20 off LoJack for notebooks.

Sceptre E420BV-F120 42-inch LED backlit HDTV launches
Sceptre is generally associated with small screen TVs and display for computers. Most of its offerings that are for watching TV can be used as a computer screen as well. Generally, the company is associated with displays for computer users that have interesting case colors like chrome or pink. The company also makes dedicated TVs as well with its latest offering being the new 42-inch LED TV you see below.

The new TV sells for $1299 making it affordable considering the huge amount of connectivity the set has and the fact that it is LED backlit. The screen offers full HD 1080p resolution and has a 6.5ms response time. Response times don't mean much, but the screen should be fast enough to have no issues with motion blur when gaming or watching your favorite shows.
The connectivity is really impressive on the TV with five HDMI ports, my TV has only two on the back and one on the front, which is far from what I really need for my components. In addition to those HDMI ports the set also has component, composite, VGA, and S-video inputs. The stand is made from tempered glass and a USB port and a headphone port are integrated as well.

OCZ Technology Launches 'RevoDrive X2,' a Second Generation, Bootable PCI-Express Solid State Drive for the High-Performance Computing Market
OCZ Technology Launches 'RevoDrive X2,' a Second Generation, Bootable PCI-Express Solid State Drive for the High-Performance Computing Market
New PCIe SSD Product Delivers Both Faster Speed and Increased Capacity for High-Performance Computing Applications
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 28, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) and memory modules for computing devices and systems, announces the launch of The RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD, a follow-up to the successful launch of the first RevoDrive, with increased performance and capacity to serve high-performance computing consumers. The RevoDrive X2 upgrades the original architecture to deliver unprecedented speed up to 740MB/s and up to 120,000 IOPS, nearly triple the throughput of other high-end SATA-based solutions with a substantial reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) to the consumer. The product is available now through OCZ's global channel.
"The original OCZ RevoDrive SSD was designed to be the first high-performance, bootable PCIe SSD solution and has become a popular choice for demanding computing applications that require faster, more reliable storage," said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology. "Building on the success of the original design, we are excited to introduce the RevoDrive X2, which delivers both increased performance and capacity, making the RevoDrive X2 a viable option for a wide spectrum of applications that include professional graphic design, multimedia rendering, and workstations. With our recently announced new state-of-the-art SSD manufacturing facility in Taiwan, OCZ will continue to be at the forefront of developing and deploying game-changing solid state storage solutions."
The RevoDrive family gets its edge by eliminating the SATA II (3Gbps) bottleneck and leveraging a PCIe x4 interface to exploit the full potential of current flash technology. Like the original RevoDrive, the X2 uses an onboard RAID 0 design, but it also employs four SandForce-1200 controllers versus two in the original to maximize data access and bandwidth. In addition to promoting a faster, more responsive PC experience, the RevoDrive X2 is bootable, unlike competing PCIe solutions, to ensure quicker start-ups and load times compared to mechanical hard drives, a major plus for workstation PCs.
The RevoDrive X2 thrives in a wide range of computing environments including demanding database and server applications as well as multi-media creation and management. Available in 100GB to 960GB capacities, the OCZ RevoDrive X2 provides ample room for data warehousing, applications, multimedia files, and operating systems.
Additionally, the X2 provides the superior durability, energy efficiency, and reliability of SSDs.
RevoDrive Accolades:
The RevoDrive X2 has been designed with increased performance and capacity compared to the first generation RevoDrive, which received worldwide acclaim just a few months ago upon its launch. Quotes from industry leading trade press include:
"The RevoDrive is an absolute breath of fresh air to the PCIe SSD field." -- PC Perspective
"The price is right and the performance is high; who could ask for anything more?" -- Tweaktown
"The Revo has set a new bar for both SSDs and RAID-based PCI-Express storage cards." -- Hot Hardware
"Â…by far the best performing SSD we have tested to date." - Techgage
"OCZ is on a roll. While most SSD manufacturers are content to just slap the latest controller and some NAND into an enclosure and call it a day, OCZ has been pumping out innovative products." -- Maximum PC

NVIDIA Tesla GPUs Power World's Fastest Supercomputer
NVIDIA Tesla GPUs Power World's Fastest Supercomputer
Half the Size, Lower Power and 50% Faster Than World's Top Supercomputer
SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/28/2010 -- Tianhe-1A, a new supercomputer revealed today at HPC 2010 China, has set a new performance record of 2.507 petaflops, as measured by the LINPACK benchmark, making it the fastest system in China and in the world today(1).
Tianhe-1A epitomizes modern heterogeneous computing by coupling massively parallel GPUs with multi-core CPUs, enabling significant achievements in performance, size and power. The system uses 7,168 NVIDIA® Tesla™ M2050 GPUs and 14,336 CPUs; it would require more than 50,000 CPUs and twice as much floor space to deliver the same performance using CPUs alone.

The Tianhe-1A Supercomputer, located at National Supercomputer Center, Tianjin
More importantly, a 2.507 petaflop system built entirely with CPUs would consume more than 12 megawatts. Thanks to the use of GPUs in a heterogeneous computing environment, Tianhe-1A consumes only 4.04 megawatts, making it 3 times more power efficient -- the difference in power consumption is enough to provide electricity to over 5000 homes for a year.
Tianhe-1A was designed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China. The system is housed at National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin and is already fully operational.
"The performance and efficiency of Tianhe-1A was simply not possible without GPUs," said Guangming Liu, chief of National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin. "The scientific research that is now possible with a system of this scale is almost without limits; we could not be more pleased with the results."
The Tianhe-1A supercomputer will be operated as an open access system to use for large scale scientific computations.
"GPUs are redefining high performance computing," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. "With the Tianhe-1A, GPUs now power two of the top three fastest computers in the world today. These GPU supercomputers are essential tools for scientists looking to turbocharge their rate of discovery."
NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, based on the CUDA™ parallel computing architecture, are designed specifically for high performance computing (HPC) environments and deliver transformative performance increases across a wide range of HPC fields, including drug discovery, hurricane and tsunami modeling, cancer research, car design, even studying the formation of galaxies.

Not only are colors rich and crisp, you donÂ’t have those pesky black bars at the top and bottom or your screen when viewing HD films. And the HD720p webcam allows you to enjoy fast, smooth, bright, and high fidelity web calls with friends and family. If you want more than a high definition computer screen.

The return of the desk phone
Oslo, Norway, and Taipei, Taiwan— October 28, 2010
Leadtek, a leading Taiwan-based manufacturer of video telecommunication products, has selected Opera Devices SDK to bring widgets and full web browsing to its new multimedia phones, AMOR 8210 and AMOR 8a10. Integrated with IP telephony, IP camera viewer, digital photo frame and web applications, they elevate the user experience on desk phones. The phones come with seven-inch touchscreen panels and an intuitive icon-based interface, that provide easy and immediate access to practical Internet services, such as news and weather, with just a few taps.

Leadtek's AMOR media phones are next-generation IP video phones based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Powered by Opera Devices SDK for Linux, the phones can easily meet operators' requirements and bring online services to the media phones. For example, Chunghwa Telecom (TAIEX: 2412, NYSE: CHT), the leading telecom service provider in Taiwan, has recently launched the service called "iHomecare," employing the power of this phone to provide online information services, such as weather, traffic, health care, discounts and cab reservations.
The media phone represents a new category of broadband multimedia devices that has the potential to become the fourth screen in the home, complementing the PC, TV and mobile handset. It offers always-on, one-touch access to popular online content. Industry data shows that the shipment of media phones is starting to take off. According to In-Stat's forecast, by 2013, annual shipments of media phones, worldwide, will range from 23 million (partial subsidy) to more than 48 million (full subsidy).
“Being the next generation of the desk phones, AMOR media phones will bring a superior user experience. The performance of a web browser on this kind of device must be as good as other devices, such as PCs and mobile phones that people often use for accessing Internet,” said Michael Yang, Spokeperson of Leadtek. “Opera Devices SDK delivers a seamless Internet experience on the media phone and is easy to customize, which also gives us flexibility to meet the requirements from the operators.”
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, said, “Opera Devices SDK is future oriented, sharing the same underlying core across platforms, from PCs to mobile phones, connected TVs and media phones. Internet telephony is quickly becoming a key component in the operator multi-play offerings. Now with Opera technology, Leadtek's media phones can give end users the added value of being able to access the Web on a phone screen quickly.”

Intel, Other Top Companies Unveil New Cloud Mission: Open Data Centers
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 27, 2010 – Intel Corporation today unveiled several new initiatives under its “Cloud 2015” vision aimed at making cloud-based Internet computing more interoperable, secure and simplified.
Intel’s Cloud 2015 vision has three key elements: a “federated” cloud that allows enterprises to share data across internal and external clouds; an “automated” network that automatically allows the secure movement of applications and resources to significantly improve energy efficiency in data centers; and PC and device-savvy “client-aware” clouds that know what types of applications, commands and processing should take place in the cloud or on your laptop, smartphone or other device – thus taking a user and specific device’s unique features into account to fully optimize an online experience.
Intel will support these goals by creating software and building new capabilities into Intel® Xeon® processors, which include features such as Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) and Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT) that form the basis of cloud computing today.
Open Data Center Alliance
As a step toward Cloud 2015, Intel helped create the Open Data Center Alliance, a coalition of more than 70 leading businesses that together represent more than $50 billion in annual IT investment and that have cloud research or projects underway. Alliance Steering Committee members include BMW*, China Life*, Deutsche Bank*, J.P. Morgan Chase*, Lockheed Martin*, Marriott International, Inc.*, National Australia Bank*, Shell*, Terremark* and UBS*.The alliance will lay out future hardware and software requirements that lead to more open and interoperable cloud and data center solutions. Intel plays a unique advisory role within the alliance, whose initial membership was purposely focused on end user companies rather than technology providers.
Intel embraces the Open Data Center AllianceÂ’s vision and goals and plans to deliver products and solutions consistent with these goals. Intel will work with its hardware and software partners, engaging the industry to innovate on open standards, delivering a faster ramp to the next stage of the Internet, and delivering an open, interoperable and secure cloud that will empower the next generation of business, movies, gaming, music, social media and other yet-to-be-invented Web services.
“The industry has an opportunity to accelerate the potential of cloud computing, delivering even better industry economics through this transformation,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager, Intel Data Center Group. “With the Open Data Center Alliance we now have the world’s top businesses focused and actively engaged with Intel and the high-tech industry, accelerating solutions to the cloud’s key challenges. “The server industry has gone through an amazing transformation since the Intel Pentium® Pro’s introduction in 1995; our goal is to ensure that cloud computing continues to deliver breakthrough economics based on the same fundamental principle —innovation on open, interoperable standards.”
Intel Cloud Builders
The goal of the Intel® Cloud Builders program is to provide a path to the Cloud 2015 vision. Intel announced a significant expansion of this program that brings together leading system and software solution partners to provide proven cloud building recipes and practical guidance on how to deploy, maintain and optimize a cloud infrastructure.
While the alliance will determine future requirements for cloud infrastructure, the Intel Cloud Builders program will help bring these requirements to life with full solutions. The program now has a total of 20 reference architectures with several more on the horizon. It represents a community of the most critical providers of technology in the cloud, including Canonical*, Cisco*, Citrix*, Dell*, EMC*, Enomaly*, Eucalyptus Systems*, Gproxy*, HP*, IBM*, Joyent*, Microsoft*, NetApp*, NetSuite*, Novell*, Parallels*, Red Hat*, Univa* and VMware*.
