Apple Hires Newton Developer, Adds Fuel To Tablet Rumor Fire

Rumors that Apple plans to launch some kind of tablet device have been flying around the internet for a while now. While such a device is unlikely to be released this month, or even this year as many of the rumors have suggested, next year still looks like a good possibility. Apple has now given speculators even more fuel to go on by rehiring a developer of the failed Newton PDA, a tablet-like device.

After 15 years, Michael Tchao is returning to Apple Inc. where he will assume the role of VP of Product Marketing reporting to Phil Schiller. Product marketing? That's an awfully odd title for Mr. Tchao, a developer that worked not only for Apple but for Nike Techlab where he oversaw a number of the iPod+Nike products. Is this a PR move on Apple's behalf to stir up more discussion of the Apple tablet, an attempt to keep lawyers from Mr. Tchao's previous employer at bay, or will Mr. Tchao actually be marketing the rumored tablet and other devices? This sure brings up more questions than it answers.

Lucid Discusses HYDRA Multi-GPU Advantages

A couple of days after Lucid officially announced its HYDRA 200 chip, bsn* talked to Offir Remez (President and VP of Business Development at Lucid) about the technology and the approach it takes to multi-GPU rendering. Offir describes how the development of the technology essentially came from frustration of the balance of power constantly shifting between GPU manufacturers and how this meant frequent system changes to keep up as a gamer. Having an option that could be used with any GPU and approached the problem of rendering from a computational perspective rather than on a frame-by-frame basis seemed the logical way to go. Unlike implementations of SLi and Crossfire technologies, Hydra uses a real-time distribution engine that resolves the problem of frame dependency, which means no more AFR modes. This is apparently what has held back the scaling of multi-GPU rendering performance up to now.

Lucid has been working with the "majority of Top 5 motherboard makers", so we should be seeing the HYDRA 200 chip shipping on boards from at least a few manufacturers in Q4 this year. The board from MSI that we have mentioned previously is due on October 29th.

Orange to Offer iPhone in the UK

Since Apple launched the iPhone in the UK, it has been exclusively tied to operator O2, much in the same way that it is tied to AT&T in the US. Orange have now announced that it will also be offering the iPhone to customers in time for Christmas, and with rumors that Vodafone also plans to add the phone to its UK portfolio, prices for UK consumers could see reductions. Orange haven't released any pricing details, though it is understood that the deal it made with Apple doesn't include the revenue-sharing component that O2 agreed to, which should enable it to offer the handset for less. It is also believed that a clause has allowed O2 to renegotiate its own agreement with Apple that could lead to a price war between the two operators.

The deal means that the US will become the only one of the four major markets that the iPhone originally launched where it is still limited to one carrier.

Users Have Downloaded 2 Billion Apps From App Store

Apple announced today that users have downloaded over 2 billion apps from the App Store for the iPhone and iTouch. The App Store currently feature 85,000 apps, which can do everything from browse Facebook to find apartments near campus. With an install base of roughly 50 million users, the average user has 40 apps for their device. Apple has clearly set the bar high with its App Store. Other players in the wireless market, such as Research in Motion and Google, could probably learn a few things from Apple.
