Elite Bastards analysis: Batman: Arkham Asylum - PC review, performance and PhysX evaluation

It's already being heralded as a modern classic, but does the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum really live up to the hype?آ We take a look at the game itself in our full review, while also taking some time to delve into this title's graphics performance and just what the use of NVIDIA's PhysX technology within the game brings to the table.

If the gameplay isn't enough to convince you that this is a worthwhile gaming experience on its own, then mixing it together with the narrative that Arkham Asylum weaves might just change your mind.آ Put simply, it's sensational... We've often heard talk of "cinematic computing" from the major GPU manufacturers, but this is the first PC title that I would genuinely care to label as "cinematic" in every meaning of the word with regards to its presentation.آ The story and the way it develops is compelling, polished and professional (while also doing the necessary when it comes to making actual gameplay entertaining), the voice acting is above and beyond your average PC game (we'll discuss that a little more shortly though), and the visuals are stunning throughout.آ Assuming that you don't loathe Batman with a passion, I can't think of any way I can fault the overall presentation of Arkham Asylum as a body of work at all.

More AMD Radeon HD 5850 X2 and 5870 X2 shots surface

Do you want to see more pictures of AMD's forthcoming "Hemlock" graphics boards, aka the Radeon HD 5850 X2 and 5870 X2?آ Of course you do!

While it is difficult to get an accurate length just from pictures, with a second die , it would be nearly impossible to squeeze it into the same sized PCB as the 5870. From our basic visual calculations, the card appears to be extended by at least 1″ – 1.5″, giving it a total footprint of an estimated 12″-12.5 inches long. Best of luck fitting this behemoth into any mid sized tower, or even a smaller full tower.

As seen in the photo’s, at least one prototype of the 5870أ—2 has it built with a squarish fan shroud, with plenty of venting along the far side to hopefully provide adequate cooling for the dual GPU’s. The 5850أ—2آ has dual circular fans over just the chips, with no shroud as seen on the rest of the product line. We can be fairly cetain that this is not the ATI OEM spec, but rather a particular manufacturer’s unique cooling option.

Intel's "Gulftown" CPU to sport improved stock cooler

I'm sure I'm not the only person here who never fails to be frustrated by Intel's stock CPU cooling solutions - Sure, they do the job, but there aren't many other polite words which can be levelled at them.آ However, it looks as though the launch of Intel's six-core "Gulftown" CPU is going to buck this trend, with French site PC World suggesting that this particular (and admittedly Extreme Edition branded) part is going to ship with an altogether more impressive cooler.

If you want to see just what Intel have chosen to do with this particular solution, then you can find a handful of images right here.
